Why was I denited early decision to Rice University? Rice Students, please reply.

Rice University was my DREAM SCHOOL. I guess you can say it was like people's "Harvard" or "Stanford". I was so sad when I received my rejection letter from Rice. It wasn't in any way hurtful but it didn't matter. I poured hours of work into my application and thought I had a reasonable chance. I mean, I know its a difficult school to get into but why didn't I at least get wait listed? Was I that low in the applicant pool spectrum?
Is Transfer Admission a better option for me? The extended time will ensure Rice receives my AP scores, entire high school academic record, and college freshman grades (which I will work extremely hard )?**

Anyways, I was wondering on the public's opinion since Rice didn't offer much reasons. Also, if you did get accepted to Rice, can you please share your thoughts and opinions, your grades and statistics, etc. This will definitely let me compare between the two:

-- SAT 1120 (Math&Read) or 1720 (w/ Writing) I will admit my test score was painfully low
-- 5 on Spanish AP, 3 on AP English, 3 on World History AP and awaiting to take many more tests in the spring of senior year including Calculus, Biology, Chemistry
-- I"m in Key Club and have 40 hrs of volunteer service by the end of the year. I"m very active in this and go to all meetings and most activities.
--Hispanic Student Association (HSA) secretary. Very active in it.
--Earth Club. Not quite as active in this one as the other two but still participate.
--GPA: 3.6
--Have taken honors/AP all throughout high school
--Played Cross Country sophomore year and trained when Track&Field started.
--Hispanic and come from a very low income family below $35,000 in combined family income
--1st Generation in my family to attend any education beyond Junior High.

as you stated, I believe it was your SAT scores. Of course they do give a holistic judgment, however as most college say extracurriculars usually will not “make up” a low test scores or grades.

and Yes i think transfer admission would be your best shot now. Work hard in college, maybe retake your SATs to above a 2100 combined and you should have a decent shot.

because you can’t spell denied right

Push through the hurt and try to focus now on your matches and safeties. As many CC people have said before—“Love thy safety”. Start the love affair with one match and one safety school to which you’ve applied.

Piggybank, that was low. I misspelled that one but look at the rest of my post. Its error free in terms of spelling.

Anyway, yeah… I think transfer is my best bet right now. I will get into Rice, one way or another.

people like piggybank annoy me to no end. Keep trying hard OP!

i can’t believe no one has a sense of humor on CC jeez

No piggybank people have a sense of humor it’s just this obviously wasn’t the right time or place for that. The OP was rejected from her DREAM school. I believe compassionate condolement and uplifting encouragement would be far more appropriate for this situation than sarcastic humor.
IMO, a sincere apology would have redeemed you of your blunder… (we’re waiting)

@livegreen4earth, good luck on your future. Do you mind telling us what your safety plan is?

@mirrorimage what are you, my mother?
@alam1 people like alam1 who have already been accepted to college but remain on CC annoy me to no end.
@livegreen I’m SOOOOOORRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Sorry sorry sorry sorry. Srry sry, lo siento mucho please excuse my dear aunt sally.

Live Green - That’s really too bad. I’m sorry you missed out on this. I offer a virtual hug and motherly encouragement to find another school and be even happier there. From the research I’ve done, I’ve come to the conclusion that 80% of the students would be very happy at 80% of the schools, so that gives you a good chance at finding something great. I know you’ve always loved Rice, but there are lots of lovable schools out there.

i’m pretty sure you were denied bc of your 1720 and your 3.6, the most important stats that a college looks for. best of luck with the rest of your apps!

If you research Rice’s admissions website, you will see that your SAT scores and high school grade point average are below the average stats of students accepted to Rice. These are the main two factors used by colleges to assess your academic preparedness.

piggybank… I’m staying because I know many people helped me when I needed help… and hopefully I can help some others… anyways, I apologize for saying that you annoy me… if what I said bothered you… if it didn’t, then i guess its all good…lol

And I agree with ChoklitRain in this case… although admissions are , to an extent, holistic… it can still be numbers driven.

Why were you rejected?
Low SAT’s
Low AP scores
Poor EC’s (40 hours, one somewhat of a leadership position, one year of sports)
Relatively low GPA for a school like Rice

No offense but you shouldn’t have put so much work into this school. Only 23% of applicants are accepted and your scores would be in the bottom 25% (probably more like bottom 10%) of people who were accepted. I live about an hour from Rice and the kids who I’ve known who were accepted had much higher scores and extracurriculars. Sorry

Uhh why did you post this twice?? You didn’t have to. And basically, you need to look at the stats of some people that got accepted - I wasn’t RIDICULOUS by any means in the applicant pool, but SO many people on this board were some of those people who were extremely competitive and were therefore offered admission. Compare your stats to them - I know that it’s sometimes unfair to compare different applicants because it’s like apples and oranges, but Rice adcoms expect a LOT on the general whole out of their applicants.

@piggybank thank god no…
oh and way to apologize… gives a thumbs up
even though this
“lo siento mucho please excuse my dear aunt sally.”
seemed a little sarcastic (but then again people rarely change.) :D

why are there 2 topics?

Of course, my safeties include many other great schools. Baylor University, UT Austin, Texas A&M, or my community college… yuk!

I also applied to SMU and since its super close to where I live and its the only other school in Texas besides Rice that offers what I plan to study in college, environmental engineering, and that at least somewhat interests me, I am probably going to enroll there.

Oh, and I accept your apology piggybank. Probably in any other setting I wouldn’t mind the sarcastic humor but it’s just that I got denied by my DREAM SCHOOL and more hurt was not what I was looking for. I appreciate your “sorry” and hope you understand my situation.
