So I did well when I started off in high school, I had a 3.9 GPA my freshman year. It went down in my sophomore year to a 3.4 and then to a 3.2 my junior year. In my senior year, I changed schools and had a 2.5 GPA. Eventually, my overall GPA was a 3.25. Still I was placed on the waiting list at UNC-Chapel Hill.
I ended up going to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, which is an ok school and pretty rigorous. I was wondering what my chances are after getting a 4.0 this semester. I am also pretty extracurricularly involved(as I was in high school) with student government, Hillel(religious org), JStreet(anti-occupation group), and the Black Student Union(No, I’m not Black). I just got the decision that I was placed on the transfer waiting list at UNC-Chapel Hill. Why did this happen after the 4.0 this semester?
Is 1 semester of college not enough?
Also do I have potential to get into more prestigious schools like Vanderbilt and UMich?
The 4.0 you received is excellent, and I applaud you for your hard work. I’m not entirely sure if my answer is valid, but I would assume the reason is that your downward trend in high school is not convincing enough that you will be able to handle the academic rigors as you progress onward to your upper division classes.
As a applicant reviewer it shows that as classes get harder in highschool, your grades declined, so a few more semesters with a strong GPA will help you the most. Don’t forget you could still very well get into UNC. Just keep working hard
Will other colleges think the same thing? Can I get in anywhere else like vanderbilt, UMich, UVA, etc?
One 4.0 semester doesn’t give many schools a strong reference point, especially considering your HS grades.
Spend a few more semester before transferring. Getting a 4.0 is an excellent achievement. Trust me, after a few semesters it will be difficult for UNC to say no
