Why was I rejected from the Honors College?

I have 2200+ SAT, ranked top 5 out of 400 students, taking all APs, have won national awards in both art and science and have leadership positions in 3 clubs. I am pretty proud of my essay for KHC, too. I didn’t get Trustee either, and I’m simply confused. At least two people from my school have been accepted and they have lower stats and fewer accolades. This rules BU off my list completely. Anyone have an idea of why I didn’t get into the honors college?

Apparently the college admissions process works in mysterious ways; I have similar stats and didn’t get in at all. It’s possible that they didn’t like your essay for some arbitrary reason, or they might have assumed that since you’re a very competitive candidate, you wouldn’t be attending BU anyway.

In any case, you’re obviously academically qualified, so I’d just put it down to bad luck and let it be their problem that you won’t be contributing to the Honors College’s prestige.

Yeah, i have really similar stats and I personally thought my honors college essay was great. W/e, but I like natanne’s words that " let it be their problem that you won’t be contributing to the Honors College’s prestige." :)

You won’t miss anything by not being part of the honors college.

KHC is not like a “typical" Honors College at many other Universities. It is by design a very small, “hand-selected” group of students that bring a diverse set of backgrounds and interests - but they look for students that are all “curious, passionate, articulate, intelligent.” Who knows what “magic formula” they use to pick the students - GPA, test scores, and class rank are only one part of what they’re looking at when they choose the students invited to the Killachand Honors College.

I believe each “class” in the KHC is only 120-140 students, out of an admitted freshman class of around 3700. The entire KHC is not much more than 500 students.

In comparison, other universities approx. the same size as BU accept 400-500 students per class, so their honors colleges may have 2000 students or more.

^^ Ditto what this guy said. You may be suprised by your rejection from the Honors college, but I’ve met honors college students who have started companies in Europe, won international awards, met presidents of nations, and who are already “selfmade” people. Don’t take it as an insult.
