Fellow EA deferees, what are your opinions on why you were deferred? Has anybody actually contacted someone to ask why? What have you done since your decision?

I was deferred because another girl from my school applied with much lower stats, but with connections and was accepted early. Thus, my guidance counselor has explained to me, I was basically given a 'polite deferral' since I had 'a better package', but have virtually no chance in the regular round. Since that's the case, I'm not going to do much. I'll probably send a letter sometime soon saying that Yale is still my first choice and I may send in another letter of recommendation. However, I won't be getting my hopes up.

Lindsey are you sure that's true????? What were her connections?? If it's a 'regular' legacy I don't consider that much of a connection because I have heard of more people than not who are legacies and deferred. Did you counselor say that you were a 'polite' deferral? I can't believe she would say that.

Is there any confirmation that they use school quotas? There is a swimmer from my school who has already been accepted to Yale (I think he had the fastest time in the country this year for his event) and is not even in the top 20% of our class (he does have a 1400, though). Do you think this kills my chances (I'm a 4000-SATI/II valedictorian).

He won't kill your chances at all. Even if they do use quotas (which they say they don't), two people from one school is not a strange occurance. I say that you have an excellent shot with those scores.

Yeah... I don't know what to make of the info I got. My regional admissions officer told my counselor that she had been rooting for me all through the EA process, and it just came down to the number that they could admit EA. She said I could send extra stuff in, but she couldn't think of anything in particular. What on earth do I make of that? Not good enough for EA, but I shouldn't do anything to make it better for RD? I mean, she said it would be fine if I did but...
?

2 people from one school isn't strange, and some schools have lots more than that, even. You still have a good shot.

Like everyone has said, 2 people from one school DOES happen. It happened at my school for EA, and we have plenty more students applying RD + the deferrals, so keep up all hope, guys!:)

They don't have quotas, but they usually won't take any but the best from one school, which often means only one person but can mean more than that. At an info session at Yale, the adcom said that in 2000 and 2001 they took no one from a particular school, and then in 2002 they took 4 out of 6 kids, and then they haven't admitted anyone since.

I'm not positive why I was deferred... either my somewhat weak math (700 SAT Math) or just that there was no compelling reason to admit me. I guess the real question is why I wasn't rejected... I think it was probably because of my essays.

hi chidimma that's amazing that they took 2 ea from your school Do you know how many applied EA?

ummm probably SATs contributed for me... but i've since raised it to a 1500... probably lots of other stuff too... still-- the only way i'll get in is if ABSOLUTELY NO other harpists apply rd...

um i dont think the op was talking about quotas. b/c this other girl had connections, yale let her in. but b/c the op had a better package, but no connections, it would look shady if this 'lesser' girl got in and the op got flat out rejected, so the op got a polite defferal so yale wouldnt have to answer for the true reason that this less qualified girl got in and the op got rejected.

I know a school that had 3 out of 12 get in early. w t f

hey, Andi! We had 5 that applied EA. 2 were accepted, 2 were deferred, and no one knows what happened to the 5th girl.. I'm not too sure that she even applied EA, and I don't want to ask...

Hi everyone. It's been a little while. Been busy with other apps, school work, and ecs.

I think that personally, I didn't have as good essays as I could have and my application wasn't as polished.

But mostly, I think that hooks are very important for EA, and I have alot of strong stats and activities, there was not huge hook to let me in.

At least, thats what I'm hoping, so that during regular decisions I will have a better chance as an all-around.

Nice to see you all,
Nickleby

A Westchester public school had 8 in last year, plus 9 to Cornell and 7 to Penn.
In a similar demographic CT school, we had 3 to Yale last year, 1 EA with a hook and 2 better-stat kids RD. This year, another town nearby got a recruited athlete in w/low stats EA and deferred 5 of the top 10 GPA's at that school. Go figure. No predicting this.

lindseylujh what are u talking about? i think ur stats are great and u will be competitive in the regular round. weird ur also NA did u mark that down?

Franklinbrown, bear in mind that reps have to maintain relationships with the schools and the aschools have to maintain relationships with the colleges, so there has to be a fair amount of walking-on-eggshells in any conversation. Take it all with a grain of salt and conclude the GC call succeeded in that your name now stands out in her mind.

And Jackson Hole needs to think about that GC---how misinformed is THAT?
"No chance in the RD round". Please. How does she "know" that, did she call for you?! (rhetorical)

hi chidimma, I'm not that surprised that two from one school were accepted to Y overall, but I am surprised to hear that two were accepted EA! I doubt that that happened in too many places. You must have some really bright and talented kids at your school (including you of course!!!:) )

cruncha22 our hs results were very similar to the schools you are talking about. Very good school in Boston area: 6 top applicants with 5 deferrals and one rejection.

hang in there everyone ---only 10 weeks to go :p

honestly, im not sure why i was deferred. i think i may have been like on the fence or whatever. i had a hook and stuff too, maybe the app just didnt pack in the UMPH! that one might expect from an acceptee. But i really think I was just on the line and happened to fall on the wrong side.
