CarnegieMT2012, you give great insight here, not just for the students, but for parents, as well. Thanks!

Also, now that I think of it, Sweeney Todd was early 2012, not 2011.

CMUMomma,
I have a son who graduated from CMU in 2011 as an actor, not MT. I have noticed that several of his fellow actors now have professional jobs in musical theater, so the lack of participating in the mainstage musical does not necessarily harm your daughter’s future prospects after graduation. I second the suggestion to participate in Playground. We have seen several proto-musicals written by CMU students or others there, as well as abbreviated versions of better known musicals. Actors do take singing for actors and dancing for actors classes, and I believe can take private lessons as well. There are also cabarets, special shows students put on as find-raisers for the senior showcase, and other performing opportunities.

Collegesearchdad, our Sweeney Todd was in fact played by a Musical Theater student. Everyone in the cast was an MT.

CarnegieMT2012, thanks for the clarification/correction. I swear someone told me he was an actor, but you can’t believe everything you hear in a theater lobby! It only took me three months to see it! LOL. Saw Spring Awakening at CMU recently and it was terrific.

Just browsing and came across this. CollgeSearchDad, perhaps the reason you thought that about their Sweeney was because I think he had never done a musical even though he was an MT. I could be wrong about that too, but I vaguely remember Gary Kline mentioning it. In any event, he was incredible. And can I just add that that production of Sweeney Todd EASILY has to be one of the best university productions I have ever seen. I still get goosebumps thinking about it!

Thanks for saying tht MTCoach! I was in it my senior year at CMU and it holds a very special place in my heart.

Absolutely! It was seriously fabulous. Were you in it? I was visiting with Barbara and Gary that week (I think it was closing weekend…it was the week of the freshman Animal Party anyway) so I was in and out of classes…mostly with freshman and sophomores…but perhaps we met. :)

Yes, I was! I played the Beggar Woman. We probably did meet, I used to run the tours and auditions during my 4 years there.

Yes! I totally remember you- I won’t post your name here, but it starts with an L, yes? You did the drama tour with the another boy (that I also won’t mention a name for haha) the first time I was there with one of my students. I hung around with him a bit when I was there last year too, at the same time of Sweeney and when you guys were preparing for your showcase. Small world. In any case, you’re a very talent girl! :)

Yes, you are correct. Can’t believe you remember that. And thank you so much, that’s incredibly kind of you to say.
