sheepishly asking the following questions...which betrays ignorance of the process...

My daughter asked me this question as she was filling out the qb app. I can't recall if it is two things match yes/no? , rank yes/no?, but isn't he match the essential goal of the QB app due 9-27?

And if your do the match, must you do the ranking / binding process?

Isnt QB really just an application for a 4 yr scholarship to one of its partner schools?

Isn't this what the match is for?

Or are there more goals to the QB app than getting a 4 yr scholarship to one QB's partner schools?

Is one such other goal to simply be admitted into some desired school and then the normal FA process for that school would be applied for payment terms?

What is due on the 27th is the application to become a finalist. If your daughter becomes a finalist she will rank up to 8 schools…

If you apply to become a finalist you don’t have to rank. However if you rank all but a few schools are binding.

Basically, but being a finalist gives you a few other perks if you chose to attend a partner school. Also getting matched guarantees you the same full scholarship financial aid package for all four years…

If you don’t get matched and enter RD you get free apps to all of the partner schools. Being a finalist also looks good when applying to other colleges and you can become a part of the Quest Scholars Network which I have heard good things about.

This would apply to what I just said about the free RD apps…

Hopefully this helps, let me know if you have any more questions…

Just to add a QB parent’s perspective:

The main reason one would not participate in the Match is to leave open the option of early decision. With a few exceptions, your daughter could not apply early decision anywhere else if she ranks colleges for the Match (when she ranks, she applies for the Match).

[Early Application Policy](QuestBridge)

Also, for my son at least, it was difficult to agree to go to whichever school picked him. (He ranked only non-binding schools for that reason; wasn’t Matched)

As to whether being Matched is the reason to apply to QB, keep in mind that fewer than 10% of finalists are matched but more than 40% of finalists are accepted into QB partners.

[Acceptance Rates](QuestBridge)

For colleges looking for economic diversity, being a QB finalist is a hook, and a pretty strong one from my son’s experience. And, at the income levels of most finalists, the FA at its partner colleges is very generous. My son was accepted RD into 4 QB schools (and is very happily attending one) and his FA package at all of them was at or very close (within $1800) of the Match level. *(It also doesn’t hurt that the QB partner schools waive application fees for finalists.)

Hope that helps. Feel free to PM me if you’d like more details.

One other reason (several much more important reasons have already been given) that some finalists choose not to rank schools, is wanting more time to concentrate on completing all the applications and essays for the individual schools on the match list. Those being your favorites, you want to say everything just right, but you can’t save a school’s essays for later unless you give up on matching that school. It’s a whole lot to think about in a very short time.

if one is going to rank schools, does this have to be in by 9-27 with the qb app? if not, when?

After the Application Deadline
- Submit your College Match Rankings by October 14. After the application deadline, it will be time to choose which of our partner colleges you want to rank for the College Match. You may choose up to 8 colleges, or you may also choose not to rank any colleges (this will make you eligible to apply to our Partner Colleges for Regular Decision only. For more information on this, please see theRegular Decision Processpage). Your rankings should be in order of preference, with your first college choice as number 1.
