"Why Yale" Optional?

I've been struggling to write the "Why Yale" essay. All the other suppliments were fine, but I can't figure out a way to write this one while staying genuine. I took another look at the prompt and then I saw it.

It wasn't labeled with that "mandatory" yellow dot.

Does that mean that I'd be able to submit my application without a "Why Yale" essay? And if I do not send one, could it be held against me?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer! I've seen other "Why Yale" topics, but none are quite right for this question.

No, it is not optional.

Yes, you can submit your app without writing anything - that is, the CommonApp will allow you to do so. Doing so would still be an incredibly stupid choice, though.

Regardless, I was struck by inspiration at about 10 pm last night and ran downstairs to write a good one. I’ll submit it. But it was a little strange seeing that it wasn’t necessary.

Optional and necessary are two different things. For selective colleges, you should be providing them with as much information about yourself as you can.

I pity the person who chooses not to answer any of Y’s supplement questions or any college’s questions because that is truely sad and doesn’t give the school the chance to understand you more. I’m glad you were struck with inspiration and have written and send it. Good Luck :)
