Why Yale

I seriously want to go to Yale, but my grades are only average (91.5 average, 2120 on SAT) and not exactly the high standards of Yale.

I tried my best to convey the reasons I want to go to Yale in the why Yale section of their supplement, but I feel that there wasn't nearly enough room.

I was thinking about writing a letter explaining why I'm so set on getting into Yale and sending it to the admissions office.

There's a pretty good chance that it might not even be read, but if by some miracle they do read it do you guys think this would hurt my application in any way?

I don’t think it’s a good idea.

Since Y accepts 10ish percent (sorry not up on the latest stats) of applicants, do you really think your reasons for admission are so special that they warrant an extra letter to explain why you should attend?

I guess maybe not

I mean…i don’t think it would necessarily hurt you. It may not help either, but why not…do everything in your power.

Although Yale asks “Why Yale,” a student’s desire probably does not have much sway in the applications process, as the majority of students really WANT to attend the school! I don’t think Admissions looks at one student’s desire to see if it out ways another student’s desire.

Before submitting additional material, I would really investigate your realistic chances. Regardless of SAT score, what was the lowest GPA of any student in your high school accepted to Yale? The number is going to fluctuate from high school to high school. At my son and daughter’s high school – over the past 10 years – the lowest GPA accepted to Yale, regardless of SAT score, was: (SCEA) 92.8 and (RD) 91.9. If your high school has similar stats, that would indicate that regardless of any additional information you may submit, Yale may just not be in your cards (sorry).
