Why Yale?

I love Yale. And I would be so excited to go there. But I started to think about it and I couldn't pin point one specific thing that I just absolutely LOVED about the school. I really like the residential colleges, and the shopping period, and the great postgrad connections, and all of that. But I can't pick one thing that stands out as that one thing that makes me love it more than any other school.

So, I decided to ask you all: What is it that makes you love Yale and what is the reason you chose it over all the other fantastic schools everyone here will/did get into?

i dont have to change anything about myself to fit in at yale.

thats something that i didnt feel while touring/ staying overnight at any of my other schools.

I would get to a school that has educated numerous presidents and feel the prestige of the university seeping into me.

Also, I love the mascot. The residential college system is amazing as well.

The residential college system, period. At the caliber of schools I prefer, it’s difficult to distinguish one school from the other. But I’m willing to say that at least 60% of my college education will come from my peers. That’s why the residential college system is so important for me.

i’m still unsure of this myself.

is the eduction level really THAT different from other tier 1 schools? i mean, yeah, there are probably slightly better professors and all, but there are going to be good, bad, and ok professors at any school really. and socially, is is that different? at most schools, one can join some clubs and make friends and then hang out with them, so how is it so different at yale? the residential college system does sound cool, but in the end, don’t people usually make some close friends and hang out with them mainly, sometimes partying/doing other activities with a wider group of people (like at most schools)?

^to the above poster, yessss you’re right on everything, BUT you’re forgetting the most important thing.

it’s YALE.

whitecadillac, you are absolutely right. I have friends who are at Yale and other comparable schools (HPSM, etc.) and everyone basically says the same thing: the people are amazing, the classes (aside from the huuuuge intro ones) are interesting, etc. There are good and bad things about any college, and although it may sound rather cliche, college is truly what you make of it. Whatever college you end up going to, Yale or otherwise, you will meet amazing people, take interesting classes, and have many opportunities.
Having said that, I like Yale because it has particularly strong programs in my areas of interest, the residential college system is also really great. I could go on…

Write an acrostic poem:

Y do I want to go to Yale?
Academically, it is awful tough to beat,
Later, I’ll be helped by the people I meet,
Every story I hear of Yale is with humor replete.

Christiansoldier-

Thats a pritty impressive poem right there = D.

“I have friends who are at Yale and other comparable schools (HPSM, etc.)…”

well i didn’t even mean just that HYPSM circle, but just other good schools in general, really. i mean, what really differentiates life at HYPSM from other good schools? (tier 1 in general)?

^oops, sorry I wasn’t clear. When I say “comparable schools” I wasn’t just referring to HYPSM, “but just other good schools in general” like UC Berkeley, UCLA, Duke, JHU, etc. the list goes on. (Is that what you mean by Tier 1??)

yeah that’s pretty much what i meant, thanks. :)

so… basically a lot of people are saying that either a) there is no real big difference or b) there are a couple small things or c) they have no reason, it’s just that it’s yale.

this is helpful. I know I need to go visit again because last time I went I think I had a cloud over my eyes that made it so all i could see was “Yale” and not the college (if that makes sense)

I think if I know, then i’ll know. if I don’t, then I’ll way the pros and cons if/when I get in

I liked the acrostic poem idea!

Yeah, I’d give a toe to get in,
After all, Yalies don’t paint with feet,
Likely since they’re crazy, though, some probably have been,
Even a finger too, 'cause if I’m in, who gives a *sheet?

That’s actually what I wrote about my Why Yale about too: the insane amount of creativity that pours out and the absolute necessity of an art education to be complemented with liberal arts, and of course, crazy smart, crazy fun people.
Though, hopefully it was done a lot more eloquently. I just remember going through 10+ drafts of “Why Yale” until I got it right.

*CC taboo word in disguise, if you didn’t catch it

bump

bump

I wasn’t going to apply to Yale until I visited campus - I’ve been dead-set on Princeton for basically my entire life. Yale has become my top choice, though, because it not only offers an amazing education (obviously), but there’s a social aspect that seemed to be missing at other Ivies. When I visited, there was a great community feeling on campus, and the students I met seemed like they cared equally about their education and their social lives. That meant a lot to me - I’m up to hard work but I’m not one to shut myself in on Saturday nights reading a book or writing a paper, I don’t think that adds up to an amazing education always.

I love the residential college system, as well. And if I’m being honest, the campus is really damn pretty. It has a great community service program, which I’m really into, great study abroad programs, and obviously a stellar drama department that I would love to participate in.

here’s a question for all you guys

harvard yale or princeton?

(answer if you’ve visited all 3)

^that question is a b**** to answer, which is why I’ll wait to answer it until admissions because if I’m admitted to only one or none, then there you go. deciding now almost isnt worth it

um… YALE!!! i’m not applying to harvard (because I think they are kinda snobby, which is stupid b/c they are no better than yale) and I haven’t really thought much about princeton. i went and the campus was for sure, but it is sort of just a macrocosm of my high school now, which is as far from what i want as it can get

your high school is as beautiful as princeton? NO FAIR
