I took 3 quarters of calculus at a local community college last yr and will be a frosh at a 4yr univ this fall. Since Med schools require one yr of math, would my CC math cover it? or do i need to take 3 more quarters of math b/c CC stuff does not satisfy med school reqs?

If i need to take more math what classes do u suggest (ie: Stats, etc)? I am hoping i dont need to take more calc cus the higher level classes are usually filled with engineers and i feel competition would be too much for me.

I heard that Karlthedog has some insight on this, so if you're here, please see if u can answer my question. thanks!

My experience has been (and I'm on the east coast so I'm not familiar with west coast schools) is that it is always a safe bet to take the pre-med required courses at a four year university. I definitely recommend though having open communication with your advisers at your new four year school. Some state schools might not mind as long as you take upper division math. For me with what I've heard it might be O.K and some medical schools don't accept CC credit it's a chance you either have to take or do your homework with what schools you’re looking at.

I thought that medical schools don't want to see SCIENCE classes taken at comm. college. I don't see why they would care if you took a whole year of calculus at comm. college. A class in statistics is a good idea. That was required for my D's biology major at a 4-year university.

Some med schools I was told just won't accept cc credits.

like which ones? is there a place that specifically states they dont accept CC stuff?

Hi Karl,

Just wanted to thank you for covering this topic. I know some of these questions can be rather intense and a little bit... nervous, sometimes, and I wanted to take the time to thank you for handling this.

Does anyone know if it's okay to take organic chemistry 1 at a community college during high school? I really want to take it, but should I or not? Also i'm like 80 percent sure I want to go to medical school. Help plz.

sciencenerd, I think bookiemom is right on this one. I wouldn't advise it. But, I don't think it hurts to call the particular med schools you are interested in and ask them. I have called before to ask about requirements and they were very helpful.

Do NOT take orgo one at a cc while you're still in high school. Not only will the fact that you took it at a cc hurt you, but since you're still in high school the chance that you'll get a poor grade in such a difficult class is fairly high.
