See title. I'm an incoming freshman as a mechanical engineering major and I got a 5 on the AP Chem test. Will this do anything to help me, and should i bother sending my score to UCLA (I took the test last year)?

yeah, i’m pretty sure that satisfies chem 20A which is required, so you can petition to not have to take the class.

You do have a choice to pass out of 20A, but I would highly suggest against it. 20B will be much tougher without have taken 20A even if you received a 5 on the AP test. I also thought about passing out of it, but my orientation counselor (who is also an engineer) suggested against it. I’ve taken both 20A and 20B, and to be honest, my counselor saved my tush.

You get 8 units too, which is very useful for enrollment purposes.

So can I choose to use the credits towards my graduation total, but still opt to take Chem 20A?

Yep that’s right.

Thanks, everyone!

One last followup question though: It says for a 5 in AP Chem, I get 8.0 credits, but the unit total to graduate is about 180-200 for engineering majors. How many credits is a unit?

You get 8 units. There’s no such thing as a credit.

Oops! What was I reading? :P

Thanks!
