Little back story, I've never had anything but A's and B's on my report cards.
Im struggling with ap chem this year and might end up with a c for the semester. How much will Tia effect my college chances at top schools? I'm very concerned about this :/

Are you currently a junior? If so, the C might significantly hurt your chances.

Yes I’m a junior. I’m 10th in my class with a 3.7 uw and 4.82 weighted. This is the first class I’ve ever had trouble with really. My top choice is university of michigan. I’m seriously concerned. Sorry for typos and bad grammar I’m typing on my phone.

What I always say to such questions is that anything bad will hurt you, and anything good will help you. A C will hurt you, but how much it hurts depends on how many good things there are to counterbalance it.

Alright. Im just scared because I study for hours and I still dint perform well in the tests. The teacher is accessible once a week for help and has the attitude that if you don’t understand it just review it. It’s not this easy for people who are visual and auditory learners like me.

Also, if I can get an A second semester will te colleges like to see the improvement? Will that make up for the poor grade?

Bump? 10 char

Of course-it always helps to show that you’ve improved, specially if you have insight into why you got a C and were subsequently able to get an A (a different approach to the material? getting a tutor? taping lectures?). Even if you can’t get an A, pulling up to a B is still an improvement and still grist for the ‘personal insights’ mill.

Same here Jarred93, except I’m a senior and I don’t have a C, but I could be coming close. AP Chemistry is a pretty tough course and I would study hours on end as well, but for some reason I could never perform well (tests cost 60% of our grade). I did great in Honors Chem 1 & 2, but this year is difficult :-\ I know where you’re coming at and I don’t really know what advice I could give you, but try your best to a B- at least. Study your all for the next exam and further improve for the next semester. Any improvement is always a plus!

The way my school works, quarter grades are 37.5% and finals are 25% of your grade. So if I wind up with a C this quarter, I can still pull a B for the semester. So I need to study and get a tutor for my exam. I will get a tutor and I will write about it in my essay of necessary but I’m just not a C student so I’m freaking out.

Don’t worry about it, especially in a class as hard as AP Chem. As long as you have a lot of other rigorous courses and are doing well in them, it shouldn’t hurt you. Make sure your ECs and Standardized Tests are good though. They’ll most definitely look past one blemish if there are 5 other amazing things about your application.

As long as you show improvement and bring your C up to at least a B or even an A next semester, then you’ll be fine I’m in the same boat as you.

My first C was in AP Chemistry during my junior year. I applied out of state to University of Michigan and I got in fine with a 2050 SAT and 20/650 rank as well as 3.82 UW and 4.227 Weighted GPA. Of course I did other things to demonstrate who I was and I think wrote good essays but in terms of all the grades and numbers bs, I think you’ll be fine. I only had A’s and B’s before AP Chem so you’re in the same boat as I was but I pulled out fine.

Thank you very much everybody! I think my question was answered :)
