I have a 33 ACT, 93 UWGPA, top 10% at a good public high school, have good ecs, and am a strong essay writer. Will American be a safety or a low match?(I have and am demonstrating interest)
You are definitely in the top 25% of applicants, so I would say it depends on your demonstrated interest. My S treated it as a safety with very similar, but slightly lower stats. However, 1) though a safety, it was always in his “top 3” choices, 2) he was drawn to a small specialty program that the school was keen on growing, and 3) he made personal contact with the admissions rep about 4x during his visits to the west coast, so that he truly knew exactly who my S was.
FYI, those stats should also get you about $8-12K of merit as well, assuming your essays and recs support your grades.
its in my top choices because of the honors program
Honors was changed two yrs ago - it’s very selective now. They only take 45 students/yr out of 15,000 applicants. I wouldn’t count on it unless you have a great hook you can discuss. Even if you assume that they only take honors kids from the top 15% of the applicant pool, you still only have a 2% shot. Keeping it real, most of the kids I saw who were offered Honors on this year’s acceptance thread had higher stats than you.
However, there are other LLCs besides Honors that you would likely get, which have a similar feel to an honors program and provide additional learning/educational experiences (See AU Scholars or Community-Based Research Scholars). And like I said, merit is still on the table, you can even get the $20K award without being in Honors. Good luck!
Yea im interested in some of the other LLCs as well as 2 of the 3 year programs
I would say it’s definitely a top choice. The honors program is prestigious and selective. American is rising on the ranks and is now the second most selective university in DC (only after Georgetown). Take it seriously
