I am an international student so there isn't really an option for me. I heard that an alumni interview does not hold as much weight as an interview with an A/O, and is this advantageous for me as a slightly shy person?

Also, how should I dress? Any tips for a face-to-face interview?

I did an alumni for a school. I wore a shirtdress because we met at a really casual place. It just depends where you are meeting, but still try to dress presentably but not as formally as you would for an on campus interview.

Although EnemyOfTheSun states that he is a shy person, it appears that when in comes to anonymity on the internet, he has no problem playing the annoying, ■■■■■ keyboard warrior.

I do them, and no, they really don’t. It’s not possible for every student to come on campus and it’s not possible for a campus to accomodate them.

My take - if they routinely turned down the applicants we take the time to interview (and write up) we’d stop doing them (and it would royally P us off after a while).

My D had one alumni interview because we couldn’t fit the campus visit into the schedule and she got more time to talk, ask questions because he wasn’t rushed. It worked out just fine. (Example: I schedule an hour for my local interviews so my reports are really thorough and I have time to talk to you about things that might be missed on the application, or that you didn’t think were important- you won’t get that much time on campus.) Go for it and hold your head up high.

EOTSun,
I appreciate the logistical & financial challenge to visit a BS from a foreign country. But the feedback that I’ve heard from my own kid who now gives tours of his BS to prospective students, is that visiting the school in person makes a better impression to the school – it shows that you are serious.

Visiting the school and interviewing at the school are 2 differnt things. Exie makes a good point that sometimes the campus just cannot accomodate an interview at a time do-able for you. In this case then, an off-site alumni interview makes sense.

I wore a 3 piece suit. Did I overdress? I’m not really sure because the other applicants were all females and I have no understanding of female fashion.
