Will applying through Questbridge give me a higher chance at being admitted to Yale?

Hello! So all the colleges I would rank on QB are need blind and would cover 100% of my tuition (as we make well below the $60k mark). Yale is on top of my list, but like the others, would give me full financial aid if admitted. In this sense, I see no reason to finish an extra application if it doesn’t do me any good. However, being new to the application process, I’m not too sure about QB as a whole and whether I’m better off applying through it then not. Thanks!

That said, you really don’t have anything to lose by applying through Questbridge.

Be aware that Yale only matches QB students whose families have a 0 EFC. S was a QB finalist but chose to apply SCEA instead for that reason. As allowed per Yale’s policies he also applied to a public university (a QB school also, but he applied through Common App). He felt he could not live with himself without first giving Yale 100% of his effort. If he had not been admitted he would have asked his apps to be forwarded (he kept a running long list). We were not so clued in about ED IIs – they seem to have gotten more popular , even just in these last 3 years! But that is now S #2’s plan. To try for Match (I don’t know how many schools he would rank) and then have an ED II picked out. And …if THAT doesn’t work, the long list.

However, chances of admission to ANY selective school are slim! Match would allow you to essentially do ED at up to 12 schools. You should look at each one’s financial page which you can access through the QB website to be sure, but most do not include loans or parental contributions for a match. For a student with high financial need, a flexible attitude toward geography and interested in multiple schools, without one clear preference, it is a great opportunity.

It comes down to a choice only you can make.

I’m a bit skeptical when Yale writes “…QuestBridge Finalists who rank Yale are not at an advantage or disadvantage compared to Finalists who do not rank Yale or who do not participate in the match.”

The rate for admission for those who apply through SCEA is much higher than that of QuestBridge’s Match Program (only around 40 applicants were matched out of thousands). Wouldn’t applying as a QB Finalist distinct you in the SCEA pool where mostly rich people apply?

Thank you.

yes, some spots in the class are reserved for Questbridge and the number of kids who qualify who can apply through Questbridge and who pick Yale as their top choice is more than the regular or SCEA admit rate.

I’m sorry, but can you rephrase that statement?

I would also look at the Questbridge app. The questions and format of the app may be able to highlight different aspects of your story that would not be as easy to portray in the common app.
