As long as I rake the classes required to get into vet school, will it be ok if I'm a psych major? Will they view my application differently if I was a bio major?

Assuming that many vet school applicants are bio majors, then I think you would stand out more as a psych major.
Have you bothered looking into vet school entry reqs at all? I’m sure you can sketch out an idea that way, and then maybe come back to CC for more specific questions.

the distance between the psych curriculum and vet school is not all that great. The recent work in animal behavior has been important to recent work in psychology, human behavior, evolutionary biology, and cognition, and vice versa. Take a look at Animals in Translation and/or Citizen Canine for popular reading on the sharing going on between these fields.

Hi ribbonroad,

By way of example, here is a list or required pre-req’s for UTK Vet school-

English Composition 6
Social Sciences/ Humanities 18
General biology / zoology with lab 8
Cellular biology 3
Genetics 3
General Inorganic Chemistry with Lab 8
Organic Chemistry with Lab 8
Physics with Lab 8
Biochemistry, Exclusive of Lab* 4

And Applicants are strongly encouraged to take additional courses in the biological and physical sciences, especially comparative anatomy, mammalian physiology and microbiology with laboratory.

I’m sure you have the social sciences/humanities covered, but you’ll need to make sure you take all the hard sciences and then you may have enough hours for a double major or minor.

And a bio major isn’t required for admission. As another poster mentioned, it may make you stand our - as long as you have the grades and required hands-on intern/work experience, as well.

Good luck :)
