I am currently a student at an urban university in Detroit, and I am transferring to the University of Michigan next winter. I will be a sophomore then. I'm just wondering if schools like Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Stanford etc look at transfer students weakly. I currently have a 3.9 GPA and am in the honors program but am not happy here. If I maintain this GPA when I am at Michigan and score above a 170 on my LSAT, will I still have as much of a chance as everyone else applying to top law schools?

I don’t think transferring, particularly after freshman year, is a detriment unless you are transferring down hill academically. I’m not sure what all the “urban” universities in Detroit are, but U. Mich. sounds like it’s a move up, and might help you. A 3.9 GPA may be harder to obtain there, though – I have no idea. However, it’s still early in your college career, and you may well change your mind about LS, so I would say the first order of business would be how attractive is the educational opportunity at UM vs. where you are now without considering law school admission. I went to HLS, and knew several people who had transferred in undergrad. I suppose you should have a good story ready just in case you need to explain some time.
