@manas1997 Thanks for the feedback. My goal wasn’t to create a laundry list of ECs, I just didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life so I explored possibilities. I think that my main focuses were music and animal rights- volunteer hours, nonprofit startup, organized service projects for this through NHS and FHS, but I also have athletics and the medicine thrown in there. How would you recommend fixing my list so that it doesn’t look like a laundry list? Should I take out the medicine stuff and replace it with the internship at the aquarium to focus the animal aspect?

CMC- 40%
Barnard- 40% (but getting into barnard is ALL about ur essays so idk)
Columbia- 4%
Stanford- 6%
Cornell- 15%
UMich- 60%

good Luck!

what subjects do you like and do well in school? Try to explore these subjects.

@manas1997 I’m a rising senior so I don’t have much time to add on to my list, I was more concerned about how to order them/ what to include on the common app to get the best shot for admission into schools like Claremont McKenna, Barnard, and Stern… I know that Stanford and Columbia are unlikely

I agree with other posters: your list of ECs are scattered all over the place. The GPA looks fine to me. ACT scores are superb.

However I have some questions:

1) What kind of medical conference would invite a high schooler to speak? Did you talk about your research? If so was it published?
2) Are you a member of an ORM?

@sgopal2 UChicago medical conferences sometimes invite lab interns to speak if they’ve significantly contributed to the project, I’m not sure how often but it’s definitely happened before. I’m listed on the research paper for the project I worked on, but I didn’t do much of the writing so I’m not including it. And yeah, I’m half asian half white

Get rid of music and sports, put in internships, and leadership ECs like non profit and chem club stuff

actually choose the meaningful internships

. This is a huge mistake. If the head of the lab thought that you deserved being listed as a co-author then definitely mention this.

Why is U Chicago not on your list? Don’t you think that the lab director would be pushing for you to be admitted?

Given the circumstances of your gpa i’d put all at matches, cornell high match/low reach (given your family connections), Stanford Solid Reach, Columbia Solid Reach. Your test scores are all phenominal, gpa great but tad low for Columbia and Stanford, I would say given your great ECs the Essay will make or brake your application at the tier schools on your list along with your recommendations! Good luck to you and I admire your hard work #GOCC

Also, if you’re in the top 10% that would make them all feasible, any higher than that should allocate the gpa. As long as you keep in mind the fact that they Cornell, Stanford and Columbia are extremely holistic in their review process and stay positive with a realistic overtone I only see great things for you!

@sgopal2 okay thanks, I’ll put the paper on there. UChicago is a great school but just not one I’m interested in

@Blazer56 thanks for the feedback!

Colleges also understand that some students will have a heavy workload and will take that into consideration when accepting applicants. I think Michigan yes (they have a very strong band program), Stanford medium reach, Columbia and Cornell should be feasible.

;) Looking good - but you need to carefully brainstorm your application. Admission officers are so numb by stats . Therefore you need draw out your story in your application for due consideration.

FYI I went to Columbia

@wecram It’s nice to have someone who’s actually already gotten into college to give feedback, do you know if colleges are looking for a single interest directly related to a major in your ECs or just demonstrated passion and depth in areas you’re interested in. I don’t want to pursue music but I have a lot of awards that prove I was dedicated to it, should that be the focus of my application or should I try to focus on my prospective career?

You have great leadership EC’s and ACT any hooks?

You are one of the stronger candidates I have seen for these schools… going along with what the others have said, i would suggest choosing ECs that represent a certain passion or desired career path, not just the most impressive ones. All in all, Ivies are a reach for virtually everyone except Superman. But best of luck! They are definitely going to be worth applying to, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed

You should put up all of your internships- those are impressive. I think you can lump your captain status things under one category, too (idk if that’s how it works though). Your ACT is amazing; great job!
Overall, I think you have a great chance at the non-Ivies since Ivies are always a reach for everyone.

Holy crap, you are doing so much! And with high grades like that?! What are you, exactly?!

All I’m going to say that you will go to a really good school, and since you said that you can’t fit all of your extracurricular activities in the common app, you should do interviews at the colleges you want to go to, and tell them all of them! On the common app, pick the ones that seem the most appealing and something that relates to your major, (if you have one).

I hope I helped you out.

In my opinion your ECs are strong. As for fitting them all on, maybe try grouping? All your trumpet activities could go together, as could your gymnastics and internships. Just get friendly with abbreviations.

Or, as another idea, use the additional info box and ask your guidance counselor to explain your family circumstances. If you feel comfortable with that.

I really think you have a great shot at CMC, from what I’ve seen of accepted students there. Stanford and Colombia are reaches, like they are for everyone, but I’d say you’re in the running. Cornell and Barnard low reaches. Bryn Mawr a match. I’m not sure about Stern or UMich.
