Excuse the title. I know that colleges won't "laugh" at you for putting on whatever EC you have in mind.

But my friend and I were talking today and he posed a really interesting problem. He asked that if I had a really embarrassing EC (like just lame and non-academic), would you put it up ?

For example, if you were Yu-Gi-Oh State Tournament Champion, would you put it up?

I, for one, would not -- even if it's state, I would just feel embarrassed and frankly a little bit more depressed than I already am for being the state tournament champion of a card game.

This is not to say I wouldn't put up respectable ones like winning a moviemaking contest or whatever...

I thought it was a pretty hilarious scenario. What do you guys think?

EDIT:: I thought of another scenario. If you won the Most Views for "Promiscuous Women of the Internet Award" on some questionable site. Would you put it up?

I think it would be a great thing in ADDITION to serious extracurriculars. It shows personality and life outside of school. And hey, the reader will probaly laugh and it'll grab the admission officer's attention. It can't harm you

Haha! Are you serious?! That's so weird. I love how CCers always say "it won't hurt you"

hey why not? if you have room at the bottom of the page, do it for laughs and spark. just make sure you have legit stuff on the rest of yoru app

....

Personally, I'd laugh at that. Seriously. And then I'd check to make sure that this is a 18-year-old applying and not a 9-year-old.

If I were an adcom, I really would question the applicant's maturity level on that one. That's something that could truly hurt you.

Yu-Gi-Oh is still considered a strategy-based card game. Thus, showing something. But if thats the best you can put as an EC, then thats a different situation.

If I were an adcom, I wouldn't consider Yu-Gi-Oh to be immature, but out of the ordinary instead. Which in turn CAN hurt you or CAN benefit you.

^ It really depends on the reader.

I agree that out of the ordinary is good, but it's hard to tell who will read your application. Personally, I think about some of the most conservative people reading applications- I want to impress them, not think I shoot porn (in response to the "promiscuous woman" award).

I was actually Yu-Gi-Oh Regional Champion a few years back....
