Will colleges really pay attention to this?

I called all the colleges I applied to via the commonapp for Regular Decision, and asked them if I could have an additional essay sent in, that was a revision/change of my commonapp essay. (reason being that it's a much more effective essay in my opinion)
They all said it was perfectly fine, overall they gave me email addresses to send the essay to (including my name and all that, and the reason i'm sending in this additional essay)

To be honest I was truly shocked that they told me I could do this, and I wanted your opinion on whether you think they will really look into this essay, read and consider it, as much or even more than my commonapp essay? I'd really like them to focus more on this one than my commonapp one, I'm really hoping that doing this will improve my chances of admissions.

Any thoughts? Is this pointless, or am I possibly helping my admissions chances (assuming they find the essay as effective and unique as I do)

Really it depends on the college. If your stats are over their average, then they might give it a whirl. Really though, they only HAVE to look at your original essay. I know for a fact Yale won’t do essay revisions - this may be true of other ivies.

It all comes down to if you are even selected in the “maybe” pile. If you were a reject from the start, it probably doesnt matter. Who knows. It may play a factor, it may not.

Well i’m trying to think that since they told me to go ahead and email or fax the essay and they would put it in my file and look at it (Davidson even said that they would replace my commonapp essay with it if I stated I wanted them to in my email), that they wouldn’t say that to me if they weren’t going to read it and consider it as a part of my application. But that’s just me trying to be super optimistic.

I think I might call a few of them back and ask them if like Davidson, they would actually be willing to “replace” my commonapp essay with the one I email to them.

The thing is, I have good SAT scores but a low GPA. I have a counselor statement that is sent with my transcripts that does a great job at explaining my low GPA and defending me as a strong student, and I also have excellent teacher rec’s, so I feel the essays/writings could play a huge part in my admissions chances? Hence me worrying to death about this…

Don’t call again. Send it. They said you could. If they consider it, fine. If not, you’re no worse off than you were before. They won’t hold it against you.

What Chedva said. If you went through the trouble to call them and they gave you a positive answer why wouldn’t you just send it?

I will send it in, i’m just wondering if they will really add it to my application and consider it, or if they perhaps just told me to do so, to be polite, or something like that. I guess I might be paranoid.

I think they will look at it. This is a very stressful time - don’t let it get to you this much. It is really in the hands of the admission reps once you have everything submitted. Just be sure that you have a true safety on your list.

Thank you, I really think/hope they will. Some of them have replied to my emails in the past, so maybe they’ll even let me know if they put it in my file or anything like that, which would be a relief to me.

You’re right, and I really should stop stressing so much, but I can’t help it, ha. I have a safety school, two actually, or at least I hope they are safety schools.
