I want to take college courses at my local community college over the summer, but I realized that if they were to be calculated into my GPA, it would lower (if I get a 4.57 this semester and take 2 courses over the summer and get two A's, it would go down to a 4.44). Are these courses included in my GPA, or are they set aside from my high school GPA and looked at differently? I already have a fairly low GPA as it is, and I am trying my hardest to bring it up before application time.

This is an easy answer. Talk to you HS Guidance Counselor. Do they take community college courses and add them into your HS GPA? I would think not, but some schools might.

This is a question only someone familiar with your High School and your local CC can really answer. Get in touch with your guidance counselor.

Agreed, talk to HS counselor nefore making any decisions. But keep in mind that college courses of any kind may count in your eventual overall college GPA for something like law school. (Though poor grades can be explained away by awesome grades in the future.) They won’t necessarily count in the GPA of your future college all by itself, for Honors & such things. How they fit into HS GPA I don’t know.

My son took a bunch of college classes and although he got all A’s they did lower his GPA because they were not weighted, but more importantly they lowered his class rank. I would suggest taking classes that do not count towards your graduation requirements, hence they do not need to be included in your high school transcript.

Now did lowering his class rank hurt him for college applications? He will find out on Ivy day but he has been accepted to every other school he has applied too (with a couple of likelies and early writes) so I think the significant college coursework outweighed class rank for the non ivies.
