I am in a domestic partnership, but he is not the parent of my child, we do not file taxes together or claim each other as dependents. Will I have to include him when I apply for FAFSA or financial aid through the individual colleges?
@kelsmom or @sybbie719 are likely to know about this. In the past, his income would not have been reportable, but it is my understanding that there has been a change.
If the partner is not the parent, his info is not included. Do not include him in the household size, either.
@kelsmom this seems nutty. Step-parents have to be included, but those in DP’s don’t? That’s unfair.
Any SO who isn’t married to a parent doesn’t get counted. Nothing unfair about it at all.
I was thinking the DP relationship was a legal one…a Civil Union. Maybe this one isn’t.
Was this a civil union that was “converted” to a marriage following the Obergefell decision? Or is it a domestic partnership in which you are not legally married or otherwise legally bound to each other?
If the latter, then the partner is essentially a boyfriend (for FAFSA purposes) and excluded.
Thanks @kelsmom !
DP is not legally married or bound to me. Has anyone run into having to report it on individual college FA applications?
