Hello, I am having a lot if trouble deciding on whether or not to drop my calc class. I have taken geometry, algebra 2 trig, and precalculus in high school already. I have a heavy schedule with two history classes second semester. I was already accepted to umass Amherst and I am waiting on stony brook as my other top choice. I am also applying to suny new paltz, farming dale, and old west bury. I have applied else where such as u Delaware. Would dropping this class affect whether or not I get in to anywhere else I'm applying as well as my umass acceptance? I spoke to my counselor and he said its up to me but doesn't recommend dropping just in case but he said it could or could not effect it. My top choice would most likely be stony brook.

For these schools, it probably wouldn’t affect your admissions status. For more selective schools, it might.

First off, congratulations on your acceptance to Amherst! It’s a great school (as you already know)… now I would really consider this decision. With a school as selective as Amherst, you never know what the admissions committees/counselors are going to think. With a subject like Calculus, it is a significant drop - to do so at the end of your high school career (and NOT replace it with another mathematics course) might be detrimental… I would talk to your academic advisor (counselor) at your high school and see what he/she says… additionally, I would do a little research on Amherst’s website and see what their policy is for schedule changes senior year… many of these more prestigious schools require students to immediately update colleges if they switch their 2nd semester senior year schedules - if this is the case, personally, I would NOT drop it… it’s only a few months and it’s better to stick with it, get a B or B- than to drop it (there’s no way they’d ever revoke admission for a B-, but you never know with a drop!!!)
Best of Luck.
