I've heard countless times that AP scores are not that important, but can be important as tiebreakers. Will college admission officers ever consider APs as a tiebreaker when one applicant has, say, all 5s while the other has 5s and a couple of 4s? I'm not talking about the difference between a 4/5 applicant and a 3/5 applicant--I'm talking about all 5s vs. all 5s/some 4s.

In other words, will getting a 4 or a couple of 4s ever make/break you?

Thanks, and I know everyone's sick and tired of these kinds of questions, but the reason why I love this forum is that you can pose these kinds of questions without shame. :)

i dont think so but probly depends on the schools. i think tiebreakers would be sem avg grades more than ap tests.

may be wrong though

For some subjects in some colleges, a 5 is necessary to get full credit and pass out of a course. In such a case, a 4 can get some credit, but not all.

AP scores will never be considered a tie-breaker in admissions, as far as I know.

Well, if all else is totally equal and one applicant had all 1’s in 2 AP tests while another had all 5’s in 25 AP tests, and they went to the same school (this is never going to happen, but let’s say it did), would they not be even considered as a tiebreaker?

They definitely do, but depending on the admissions person they may see 4’s and 5’s as the same thing, and use other things…i.e GPA and EC’s as tiebrakers since two applicants are very unlikely bound to be identical save a difference of 4’s and 5’s on their tests
I think we just study our hearts out all year to get that 5 for bragging rights and to feel accomplished haha

hmmm so for like ivy league-level colleges, do they consider 4s and 5s generally the same?

IDK but I do know you should be more worried with your GPA, EC’s, SAT’s, and essays than AP scores…i heard most ivy league dont even let you use AP scores as college credit except maybe calculus

I honestly don’t think that AP scores matter that much in the admissions process. Worry about your EC’s, grades, hooks, etc. first. And if you’re still concerned about the APs, hell, just don’t send them in until after you get accepted to X school.
