Hey ya'll. So, just out of curiosity, does anyone know if having dreadlocks will affect my chances of being accepted into top colleges? I'm white, and since it's not a religious thing, I'm worried that people at interviews or tours will be a bit prejudiced. In a perfect world, people wouldn't judge others, but lets be real; the vast majority of the general public believes dreads to be "dirty," "unclean," and signify drug usage.
So anyway, just like the title says, does anyone know if having dreads will negatively affect my chances of getting into schools like Dartmouth, Duke, or Middlebury? Thanks so much!

why take the risk at all? no matter what anyone says here, you will never know for sure if that will affect you negatively. I say, take them out, go in looking as “normal” as you think you can, than go back to however you want to dress/ prepare your hair.

If you go in with dreadlocks, you will MOST SURELY have some sort of risk, especially if there is an interview involved.

GL at the interviews btw.

The interviews hardly count. Maybe they’ll think you’re unique.

Why would you want to go to a school that would reject you for your hairstyle?

Keep 'em in…

Leave them on so that when you get rejected you will have a good excuse.

^ this comment gets a 10/10

Sometimes I think College Confidential needs a “classics” forum for these threads.

^^^ Where is that “like” button when I need it?

Wow awsome thread you don’t see this every day.

tell them your in the peace core.

Tell them your hardcore.

Tell them you want a music major and your fav artist is bob Marley.
(He’s one of mine)

Stand in the bushes you’ll blend in.

Tell them you lost a bet.

Tell them you woke up that way in vagas.

Tell them you cut your hair.

Tell them, trust me this stuf doesn’t come out.

Tell them god told you.

Tell the it’s complicated

Nah I’m just playin, dreadlocks are cool. My guitar teacher had dreadlocks.

Like that wone said, go to a college that excepts you as hue as hue you are.

But if not just cut it.

But as you know it takes a long time to grow dreadlocks back very LONG TIME !!! ;( :0 ;0.

what about tattoos? And I’m talking here about sleeves. Of cfourse, wearing a long button down shirt for an interview and such is i guess mandatory, but what about after wards?

I am an old-fashioned, conservative mom. However, I say keep your dread-locks. What matters are your academics, ec’s, and your perosnality. In this day and age, I don’t think a hairstyle will keep you out of even the finest colleges. My son attended boarding school with a cross-dresser. This young man wore full make-up and gothic woman’s clothing every day. He was a top student, artist and a wonderful person. He was accepted to every school he applied to, which included Brown, Amherst and Williams.

I agree about the dreadlocks. Keep them, they are part of what makes you you.

On the other hand, I have great difficulty looking at someone with an eye brow piercing, tongue piercing, lip piercing and especially nipple piercing and not feeling some degree of pain imagining how much that would hurt. LOL!

Earrings, naval piercings and even simple nose piercings don’t seem to bother me as much.

Ask yourself: do you want to attend a school that would reject you because of your dreadlocks?

If you were asking about piercings, I might say take them out–it’s easy, and why risk offending someone for something so insignificant? But with dreads, it’s not that easy, and it’s so not worth it when the interview counts for so little.

Besides, dreads are awesome.

ditto the tattoos - you’ll stand out and that’s a hard (but highly desirable) thing to do, so flaunt 'em

If you have a tounge ring, make sure you’re panting like a dog. Maybe they’ll think your unique…

I once wondered if biting my left finger nails would affect my chances. My guidance counselor told me no, so I blame all my rejections on biting my right ones.

Sarcasm aside, cut um.

so did you get the dreads? because i’m a high school student who wants dreads but i am still not sure…help
