Will "Holistic Review" give me a chance?

3.8 w 2140 microsoft internship for the win!!!

No APs till senior year?!
Did you take UC approved honors classes?
I'm assuming yes, since your weighted GPA has to be a 3.0.

Are you talking to me?

Im OOS...and I couldn't take AP's on chemotherapy. I mean if it was possible, I wouldv'e been game to do that if it was possible. I took all Honors and Gifted courses my whole career as a student.

BruinsJEW if its not too personal, may i ask you what type of cancer you have overcome? out of curiosity

Stage II Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Six cycles of chemo with 2 rounds each; that 12 times of 5 days each, thats 60 days just on chemo, 5-10 days hospital stays for blood transfer/fever/etc, and 1 time every 2 weeks an outpatient chemotherapy but then i was usually rushed to the ER, becuase of bad reactions to those specific chemicals.

Ps dont worry about asking me these personal questions. i answer them all time and share my experience with many patients and their parents. i'm very open and i don't mind sharing my story. if you have anymore questions, don't feel shy to ask. i'm very open as i said already and don't mind getting personal.

Then i went back to my public high school and after school went for radiation therapy. i'm very mature for my age even though my looks make me look like im just a child. i don't fall into these peer pressure traps, and i have learned many valuable changes that I plan on sharing with my future classmates at whatever college I end up at. If I get into UCLA, I will be bringing my foundation and hopefully you all will join.

no i didnt

my weighted gpa is 2.94

Joey the UC booklett has weighted GPA ranges and the lowest it goes is 3.0-3.2 weighted and only like 1 percent make it. Im guessing those are athletes.

aww bruinsjew, if we both get in and go there, i'll definitely join your foundation! :) our family friend is going through what you had... except she got it detected in stage IV so its definitely a lot more complicated... but she's been doing well with treatments and whatnot so we're all just praying for her. i'm so glad you've overcome this. :) i really hope that ucla sees your tenacity in conquering your health obstacles!

No offense, but do you have any special circumstances? I don't see how the heck you got into both UCI and UCD with less than a 3.0 weighted and rather mediocre SAT scores.

Thanks starrynight! I have the potential even though it might not show on my SATs.

^^^ thats what everyone said.. my counselors.. parents.. friends

sure showed him huh

no i didnt have cancer or anything like that

im guessing my EC's and essays made up for it

do you mind listing your ecs and essay topics ? :)

uh sure np

I'm anchoring the school television news, editor of yearbook/newspaper, president of the schools volunteer club with 800+ hours, 3 Varsity Sports, Student Council, Producer of our local community televised channel, interned overseas tv stations for 2 summers, comedy acts at a downtown comedy club every fortnight.

as for essays
the main essay
I talked about my overseas internship experiences and what it was like living in another country by myself i had two summers in two countries so that was my 600 word one

the contribution essay
i talked about how i want to connect with every student on campus and bringing the college community closer together

the freebie
i talked about how i want to be the first asian comedian to break the american mainstream

okay well your ECs explain it :) there is no doubt that it more than made up for your gpa etc etc :) great accomplishments btw.

lol thanks yeah i didnt have time for a lot of things outside of those activities

as my gpa and sats suffered for it

should of been more balanced

u think i have a shot at LA?

okay well haha i personally think real world experience is much more important than gpa and sats.

and i definitely think you stand at chance at UCLA

it might be a lower chance compared to those with high academics, however you certainly stand a chance esp. because your ECs make you stand out A LOT.

I think you have a shot, but a long shot. You should really be happy that Irvine accepted you. If you applied to SD and didn't get in, that should be a pretty big bellwether to see your chances at LA. If SD has a 42% acceptance rate, then you not getting in there will mean that your chances at LA are probably less than half of that.

yes i see your point but i knew SD used a point system and EC's and essays can only do so much for you whilst your GPAs and SATs were 80% of the process

but hopefully UCLA's "Holistic Review" can nail me in its really a crapshoot really with my terrible stats but decent EC's and essays
