Will I be penalized if I do not take a 4th year of science my senior year?

I have taken bio, chem h, and physics h but I just don’t like science. I’m planning to major in econ or statistics and am aiming to get into ucb. Would it be okay if I don’t take a science? My classes for senior year are ap stats, ap lit, ap spanish, ap gov one semester (econ the other semester, no ap option) and accounting 2.

What are your state requirements? Some states require a 4th science.

The UC’s only require 2 years (recommend 3) so I would meet the requirements. I was just wondering if they would strongly prefer 4 years of science.

If you took each of the holy trinity, you should be fine as long as not a STEM kid (which you say you aren’t). Something else to consider, however, is whether you could/should take one of these sciences at the AP level as a senior, get a good score on the AP test, and then place out of taking that same science course in college.

This wasn’t your question, but majors in econ and stats both involve calculus. Why not take calc?

I already took Calculus BC this year (my junior year). Doing well in it- I enjoy math. My problem is physics theory- I really suck at theoretical problems (I’m awful at life sciences so bio and chem are out).

The thing is that I like math and business, so I’m not a cookie-cutter humanities kid either. So I’m not sure what to do.

Economics is a good choice if you like math and social studies. Note that UCB has different levels of math intensity that you can choose for economics. The higher math one requires multivariable calculus and linear algebra. Some other UCs have similar options.

UCB also has an operations research major that you may be interested in.

Thanks @ucbalumnus - that’s what I was thinking of majoring in (I’ll check out the operations major as well, thanks). Do you think I need to take a 4th year of science to get into ucb?

UCB web pages do not appear to specify a preference for four years of HS science, unlike the web pages of some other highly selective colleges (though applicants to the College of Engineering are recommended to take physics in high school). So it is probably not a big deal, especially since you already have all three of biology, chemistry, and physics.

You will be fine unless you apply to a highly competitive STEM school or apply to a STEM major at a very competitive school. Even then, if your grades and test scores are good, you should be fine. Best of luck!

Thank you all for your help! I probably will not apply for college of engineering- the only STEM major I might apply to is applied math or statistics…

@lovescookies You’re a lot like me: not really into sciences but very interested in econ/stat/business. I chose not to take a science in my senior year; instead, I chose to take AP Econ. You should be fine.

@MrElonMusk exactly. Thanks for your advice!

How does this look as a final schedule for senior year? AP Statistics, APCS Principles, AP Literature, AP Spanish Language & Composition, and Gov/econ, + hopefully, I’ll take environmental science in a community college in the fall.
