Is UGA the right fit for me?

Hi everyone!

I’ve been accepted to UGA OOS and have been granted some scholarship money so I might be able to afford it. UGA is one of my top schools, however, I am worried whether I would like it or not. I love music, I cannot play anything, but I enjoy going to concerts and listening to alt and classic rock. I guess you could say I have some of the stereotypical hipster interests - liberal, likes alt music, indie film and fashion etc… I’ve applied into Journalism as my intended major, and I would also like to get a certificate in Sustainability from the school. I know UGA draws both a more “hipster” population in addition to southern preps. I am not at all against greek life. I plan to rush, however, I am not the kind of person who wants it to run my life, and I will not pledge to any sororities if I feel like I do not mesh well with them. I want to party some in college, but I also want to enjoy the artsy side of Athens, in addition to my academic pursuits. Is it possible to live the best of both worlds and be apart of both? I would appreciate any feedback from students, athens dwellers, alumni, etc.

I visit UGA’s all the time and live near it to know it’s reputation and the types of people. For one, it’s known as a party school. No doubt about that. Downtown Athens is filled with kids drinking on weekends. But there’s also a kids who may sit down at cafes and do work. There’s lots of different types of kids at UGA. I see “hipster” people, the town has great vintage and thtift shops that really go well to the school, however majority of students I see are the Southern prep type. I would say UGA has more conservatives than liberals, but both exist. You’ll have fun, and you will find people you like. Although I would visit if I were you, but overall UGA was pretty decent for me. Congrats on your acceptance!
