Will I fit in at Wes?

I applied to all the New England LACS and only got into Wesleyan. I’m sloppy preppy, somewhat conservative and sporty /outdoorsy. I’m also musical and love to think outside of the box as well. I’m nervous that Wes is going to be too artsy/hip Am I going to fit in?

@nextstep1 - I’m pretty sure that’s why Wes accepted you. Don’t overthink this. :D/

If you lack enthusiasm for Wesleyan and will only be attending because it’s the one school that would have you I think some serious thought might be in order. As I wrote in my other reply, why not consider a gap year and reapplication to schools whose ethos seems more compatible. You sound like a great match for Hamilton, where I can imagine people saying “think outside of the box” with a straight face.

^TBH, this doesn’t sound like a gap year situation. OP just wants to know if he will find his peep.Of course he will.

Undoubtedly s/he will. But Wesleyan shouldn’t be anyone’s consolation prize, and my comment was intended to tweeze out a bit of gratitude through perhaps too subtle snark.

I never said Wes was a consolation prize. I’m a 17 year old girl whose just trying to figure out if I will find my vibe at Wes.

You have nothing to worry about. With each year Wesleyan has become more mainstream. It’s no longer the liberal stronghold of yore.

You applied to all the New England LACs and we’re “only” admitted to one of the most selective? Rejected at Conn, Trinity, Bates, Colby, Wheaton, Bennington, Marlboro, etc. etc.? Well, that’s pretty unusual.

From personal experience, the “personalities” of these schools tend to be greatly exaggerated. We have a decidedly non-artsy/hip kiddo at Wesleyan who has most definitely found her peeps … lots and lots and lots of them. Some of them actually include those artsy hipsters, who turn out to be pretty nice people! Best of luck.

+1: “thinking outside the box”, if a bit hackneyed as phrases go, is a specialty at Wesleyan. The music scene is huge, and Wesleyan has joined its NESCAC rivals in recent years in caring about sports. It sounds like you may be a better fit than you think.
