I applied to Brown College. I am a male. Wrote super creative essays, really amusing. What are my chances at getting into Brown???

Wrong thread? Unless you were trying to compare Brown & UVa...

I believe he was talking about Brown College on Monroe Hill. I don't think it is that hard to get in. If your essays are as good as you say I think you're in.

Really? I've heard it's pretty competitive...

hey uvajoe, i am a first year living in Brown NOW.

:)

it';s easier for males to get in, since most guys are too lazy to write the essays. however, last year;s acceptance rate was 1 in 6. so yes it's pretty competitive. HOWEVER, last year Bice was not available. but this year it is, so we're expecting the acceptance rate to go up to like 1 in 4 to 1 in 3 or maybe 1 in 5. i dont know. im on the admission committee and will read applicants' essays.

shoot me an email if u have any question or wanna improve ur chance of getting in, my id is yx5t. or aim me, my sn is yipuxia.

Hey untilted,
Could you tell me what life in Brown is like?
1. Socially
2. Privacy
3. Climate(indoor, it's either hot or cold here in hereford)
4. Who gets the fireplace?
Also for males what do you think the acceptance rate will be?

Thanks buddy.

socially:

very very diverse. you get the artsiest english/religious studies majors to simply weirdos (very few of them) to hard-science majors (many of them) to some preppy guys/girls. Some people go out to party like crazy, some prefer to do intellectually stimulating and non-drinking activities on weekends.

u get ur own room dude..........how nice is THAT! bathroom is super nice, NEVER had shower conflicts..............

in the summer (many people in old/new dorms complain that thye dont have A/C), although i have A/C, i dont even use it, coz the temperature in my room is just right. In winter, u;ll be fine even with no heat. With the extra heat, it;s even better.

depends. the first person to move in decides. my suitemate moved in 3 days early and chose to get the room without fireplace. when i moved in, i was like: "are u stupid?", so i took the fireplace room.....people who like to read/enjoy silence prefer the inside room. people who are extremely social prefer the outside room with fireplace.

Male's acceptance rate: YOU NEVER KNOW, it fluctuates SO much every year, sometimes, 1 in 4, sometimes 1 in 3, sometimes 1 in 5. it depends on how well we advertize. well, u never know unless you apply. so apply!

Thanks so much, and i've submitted my app, last tuesday. I want to get in REALLY bad, i was walking to newcomb today and strolled through Brown, it's got such a...GOOD feel to it. THanks again Untilted.

just curious...what IS brown college?

Brown College on Monroe Hill (yep, that's its full name) is a residential college. Monroe Hill next to Brown College is the former home and law office of President James Monroe. The majority of UVA is located on President Monroe's old property.

http://www.brown-college.org/

The other residential colleges are Hereford College and the IRC (International Residential College) where I believe a 1/4 to 1/3 of the residents are international students.

Hahaha...I just checked out the pics in the Brown College site. Were we that crazy/weird back in the day? I guess so.

Okay, here's a shout out to Smith portal. I miss you! (sigh)

I miss the slumber parties in my room.

I miss dodging both the Catholic Students Association and the Queer Student Union. (The leadership of both groups lived in Smith one year. They both tried to recruit me. Very strange.)

I miss my friends continually trying to break into my room. (I ended up putting cactuses/cacti by my window to keep them out.)

I miss the Haunted Tunnels when they used to be in the tunnels. (That was scary ****, yo! Imagine having to walk the entire length of all the tunnels with people dressed as devils, vampires, etc. coming at you in complete darkness and you have nowhere to go.)

I miss taking the Short Courses for both wine tasting and bartending and getting so messed up every class that at times I couldn't make it from Newcomb Hall to Brown, and they're next door! (One day, the instructor made us make double the amount of drinks because he had to cancel the previous class. I was so torn up that my friends kidnapped me and dumped me at my buddy James' porch where they proceeded to throw things at me knowing that I was too messed up to move.)

I miss the Mass Streak. The police started arresting people for streaking the Lawn, and in protest, thousands of people came to the Lawn as hundreds of people streaked all at the same time. There was even a picture of my friend Matt totally naked standing between 2 cops in the school newspaper. (Back then, we had 2 daily papers - the Cavalier Daily and the University Journal. May the UJ rest in peace.) That night I also met my first love - during the Mass Streak believe it or not!

Oh Brown College...good times...good times...

Hail to Rogers Portal

the theme for the haunting (2 weeks ago) was Psycho Path. we generated some 3000 dollars...........

masssss streak, lol

im thinking about teaching a short course in history of british pop music.

Joe, where do you live right now? do you like it? and also, have you met any brownies/have you talked any brownies yet? there;s a room for brownies in newcomb, you are welcome to come and sit down and chat with brownies............

Here are a some "important life lessons" from streaking the Lawn. LOL!

I live in hereford, Blah. Yea i've met some brownies, they're all super friendly.

why do u have to apply? Sry for asking, im new to this housing stuff

Because it's super competitive, similar to the reasons why you have to apply to colleges, not enough room.

very very true.

it's not as hard as applying for college though!

10-20 out of my 200 facebook friends(almost all first years) are applying for brown next year........dont know if it;s gonna get REALLY intense, or maybe brownie-wanna-bes just tend to know me.......:)

is brown the like best for housing?

Depends completely on what you want....some would say definitely yes and others would say no.

BTW I just went for a walk from Hereford all the way down to the Lawn and Rotunda, OMG i am freezing, what happened to the temp!

so joe, how are u gonna transfer? what college are u in right now?
