Will I get in?

Hey guys,

First of all I am new, so if I posted incorrectly i am apologizing in advance. But I attend Saddleback College (CC in South Orange County) and am engineering major...
I really want to do Mech. Eng at a good UC but I am afraid my GPA might hurt my chances(3.04 currently).. I have finished my IGETC (except for a bio science course) and my single var. calc, chem series, programming, statics, drafting and mech. physics. I have Multi Var. Calc, Linear, Diff Eq., Physics (electromagnetism and quantum), and my circuit analysis course left to take (fall 09 and spring 10)... I know I still have time to improve my GPA but I am stuck in this funk where I can only get B's and these next few classes are pretty tough I hear.
I do have a couple of EC's under my belt like the Pres of the Engineering Club,ICC rep of math club, tutor for school and as a job, other work experiences, and community service. I am applying in Nov. and assuming my GPA remains around a 3.0, do you guys think I have a legitimate shot of getting into UC's like UCSD, UCSB, UCI, UCD, CSSLO (not a UC but you know...)? Any input is much appreciated.

You will get knowledgeable responders by posting this on the UC transfers board.

Cal Poly SLO is very selective … especially in the Eng. department. I’d say you would need a higher GPA to get in. But keep this in mind…3.0 is pretty much the bare minimum GPA, and getting into an Engineering program at places like UCSD is going to be tough. You have a low chance, especially if your grade is going to keep dropping. EC’s will not help you if you have a low GPA.

Yah UCSD or any of the other schools you mentioned might be a stretch. I think average gpa is like 3.5 or so. More likely will have to attend UCM or UCR.

If you keep your gpa at 3.0, I would look at UCI/UCSB/UCD and Cal Poly Pomona. The UCSD might be harder to get into, but I would try. SLO very selective also, especially for ME.

thanks for the response guys… I was looking at the UC stat finder and other upper division admission stats and UCSD is surprisngly easy (from what I expected) to get into. UCD and UCSB are the one’s that kinda took me by surprise… Any one know why that is?

If you want to go to the best engineering school the state can offer you, why not apply to Berkeley and UCLA?

that gpa is not gonna get him into the best engineering programs in the country. If you work on your gpa you can probably get tag into UCSB, UCD, and UCI. UCSD is pretty easy to get into.

lmendoza-I think that UCD and UCSB lose a lot of potential students to UCLA and UCB. They are great schools, but let’s face it, most people would choose UCLA or UCB if the opportunity presented itself. Depending on major, of course.
