Don’t rely on the essay too much. It will only count as a very small portion of your admission decision…unless you’re a horrid writer. For large state schools like Rutgers, GPA and SAT score probably make up about 60% while extracurricular counts for about 30%. Then there comes the essay. Unless it is glaringly awful, the essay won’t make of a difference in getting you in. I know this for a fact because one of my friends who applied made a hilarious mistake - the last half of his conclusion paragraph was gone. But he still got into SAS because it was overally a good essay, and his GPA and test score met the standard.

Well I gotta rely on it now, cause I’m applying soon. lol.
My grades and SAT score aren’t the best, so I gotta just do the super early application and hope for the best!

Sure, you can do your best on your essay, but I’m tell you, don’t be surprised if you don’t the the result you wanted.

well my chances of getting in are higher the earlier i apply, so fingers are crossed. lol

Sixflags, have you actually applied to colleges? How do you know they average it out? I just saw the CB site and it lets me choose which I want the highest to send so LOL.

You can choose the higher one if you took it twice, and the collegeboard will only send the higher one. If you took it more than that, the collegeboard will send all the scores to the school you’re applying to even if you chose to send the highest score. That’s what most universities require collegeboard including Rutgers.

And yes, I have applied to colleges, so you can LOL at yourself ;)

I’ve taken the SATs a few times, and I’m pretty sure Rutgers takes the superscore.

@blackbirdfly

Don’t worry. Keep your essay in good shape, hope for the best, you should be fine. Yea, definitely see your English teacher though; that’s what many students do, and I heard it helps tremendously.

This is seriously annoying. You guys make it seem like I’m happy with my score and as if I’m trying to flaunt it. I’m telling you I took the test multiple times getting the same score, so that means that if I took it again nothing is gonna fricking change. And I need help to think of other ways that will give me an advantage, cause obviously my SAT score is my weakness.

After my essay is written I’m getting it edited by an English teacher and people, yupppp

Lmao I love your optimism sixflags and I like ur user name too. so simple and nice

Have you tried to take the ACT? You don’t need to know science to do well since its essentially an English portion but based on science experiments. You can’t study for the science portion.

I took the ACT twice in my senior year sometime between Aug and Nov. I improved my score just by getting used to the timing and test format. I strongly suggest you take the ACT. You don’t have to study, just please learn the format. Get the timing down, that’s most important.

On the Act, it is way easier to do well on English because there are 4 choices rather than 5 on the SAT. Math on the ACT is easier since the questions are shorter and to the point.

I really want you to get in to Rutgers, but I’m afraid you have a low chance of getting in at the moment. Sign up for the earliest date possible for ACT and TAKE IT. I’m sure you’ll do better on the ACT. I had trouble on the SAT myself and found the ACT way easier. I got a 30 on the ACT. Good luck, I hope you get in!! btw I’m an incoming freshman to Rutgers NB. :D

I don’t think sending in your application early gets you any special treatment. I submitted mine a couple of days before the deadline, and found out I was accepted extremely quickly, earlier than many people who had applied “early.” I had better scores/grades/etc.

I would give the ACT a shot, just to see how things play out.

not gonna lie…everyone from my school gets into rutgers now a days…with your stats i would consider it a walk in the park getting in especially if u apply relatively early

@sixflags, well I am pretty sure they only take your highest score in each section. I have never heard of them “averaging” it out. Unless you can find me a source for it, I know for sure they take the highest in each. I will try to find the link on where they say it.

Hey!

you have a really good chance of getting in. Look at our school’s Naviance. 95% of people who apply early got in (36/38). AND the lowest person to have been accepted in REGULAR decision had a GPA of 1, and a SAT score of 1070.

Even for Early, the lowest accepted GPA was a 2.91 and a 1540 on the SAT.

As long as you work hard in your senior year, take challenging classes, and write a good essay, you should have a very high chance of getting in. Remember to visit the school and go to an information session. In this way, the college knows you have expressed your “demonstrated interest”

Don’t let these elitists on CC discourage you. You have a really good chance, especially if you apply early.

I also live in jersey but have no intention of going to Rutgers. To secure your spot in Rutgers if you live in jersey you must have a B gpa.

Hello what are my chances to getting in? Im from NJ and i have a 3.08 gpa and a 1450 SAT but i do plan on taking it again in October and raising my grades.
