Will I get into Rutgers New Brunswick?

I'm going into my senior year of high school.

My SAT Score: 1600
GPA: 3.21 (as of now)

I have average EC's. And I took decent classes.

I go to school in West-Windsor Plainsboro, so that's in the state of NJ.

I only want to go to Rutgers New Brunswick.

If I have a well written essay, and apply super early (September), what are my chances of getting in?

Also, what school should I apply to, and what major should I choose, to better my chances?

HELP PLEASE!!! I really want to get in. Thank you!!!

Just wondering; why do you want to go to Rutgers? Is there a specific program at Rutgers that attracts your attention or is it just the name value?

Applying early definitely helps considering the fact that some people miss their opportunity for honors programs when they apply late.

I like the school. Definitely not just the name value. And it’s in state for me so the tuition fee is better.

Yeah I’m definitely applying early.
Which school should I apply to for better chances of getting in though?
And is it better to choose an area of study or leave that as “undecided”?

You should apply to School of Arts and Sciences. BUT, they let you apply to 3 schools; just apply to SAS, SEBS, and SOE. I don’t think it will matter much if you put undecided as your major, because I’m sure many other students don’t decide what they’re going to study when they first enter the school. Make sure to clarify in the essay WHY you chose Rutgers other than the fact that it’s cheap for instate students.

North or South?

Are first year students allowed to apply to the school of communication/info tech?
Yeah, I’m going to apply to Arts and Sciences.

What’s a good length for Rutger’s admission essay?

So far, I made a list of all the things I’ve done ever since I was little (but I’m not mentioning my age), and bringing up that my brother is going to be an alumni there. I’m not sure what to put for how I’ll contribute to Rutgers though.

Here’s the prompt: Rutgers University is a vibrant community of people with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. How would you benefit from and contribute to such an environment? Consider variables such as your talents, travels, leadership activities, volunteer services, and cultural experiences. (max 3800 characters)

I go to South!

See, that’s the thing; you said you liked Rutgers. Why? I can’t answer that for you; only you can. Why does Rutgers look so attractive to you? What are you looking forward at Rutgers?

I couldn’t say what your chances are now but I can say retaking the SAT and hopefully boosting it about a 100 points would significantly increase your chances. There’s still time, I would prioritize that over applying super early

What if I’ve already taken the SAT three times, and my score hasn’t improved by much? The third time I took it, I studied hard, and ended up getting the same score I did the first two times…=/
So idk. I would rather have a well written essay and early application…

You took the SAT 3 times??? Are you aware that even if you send them your super score, they will nonetheless average all your SAT scores if you take it more than twice? If you know you won’t do any better, taking the SAT 3 times isn’t a very good idea…and not to mention the 4th time.

I mean, quite frankly, I do agree with needsmorsleep here; 1600 is a bit too low. Have you considered taking the ACT instead?

No. I’m not good with the subjects on the ACT.
And I thought they take the superscore?

I’m still going to try to apply as soon as the applications are open. So in like 2 weeks.
I need a very good essay.
Any writing tips?

Well, good luck. I hope everything works out well for you. As for the essay, research and learn more about the school in depth, because you still haven’t stated why you think Rutgers is right for you. This gives me an impression that you don’t know much about the school yet. If you dont have enough knowledge on the school you’re applying to - as for any other schools - your essay will sound rudimentary and superficial to say the least.

Thanks for pointing this out. I do need to do more research.

Here are the reasons why I want to go
Academically, I think it’s a good school, and that’s very important to me. I’m not wasting money on a college I don’t think I can benefit from. I want to go to New Brunswick (over Newark and Camden), because it’s the main and largest campus (and I feel the safest there out of the options). I love how there are 5 campuses there. That’s what makes Rutgers different. And the way of transportation is also nice - they provide buses. I also love how they provide internships and make sure people who graduate are able to find jobs and whatnot. So if I go there, I feel confident that Rutgers can bring me success. And my success would be their success. They also have hundreds of clubs and activities and community service that I’d love to take part in. I want to get in SO bad. I love everything about it.
Please let me know what more I need to research on, and what I should bring up on my essay. Thanks for the help. Much appreciated!

You’re still being way too general. You have to be much more specific than that.

“Academically, I think it’s a good school, and that’s very important to me.” Again, why? What academic aspect are you looking forward at Rutgers? Why is it so important to you?

“I’m not wasting money on a college I don’t think I can benefit from.” Uh, don’t say that. Universities don’t like students who attack other schools, because it shows a glimpse of your negative personality.

“I want to go to New Brunswick…because it’s the main and largest campus.” Why would you want to go to the largest campus? What are you looking forward to be doing at such environment?

“I love how there are 5 campuses there.” What does having 5 campuses have anything to do with your interest? Why does that make Rutgers so special? How would you interact in those 5 campuses? Be specific.

“And the way of transportation is also nice - they provide buses.” So do many other schools, so you can’t use that as a reason.

“I also love how they provide internships and make sure people who graduate are able to find jobs and whatnot.” So do many many other schools.

“So if I go there, I feel confident that Rutgers can bring me success.” How? How would Rutgers benefit your education? What do YOU have to offer to Rutgers? And why should Rutgers choose you among thousands of other applicants?

“They also have hundreds of clubs and activities and community service that I’d love to take part in.” So do many other schools.

“I love everything about it.” That’s just simply not possible. If you want to state that, you have to literally list “everything” that Rutgers has, and describe in detail why you are so attracted to each aspect you listed. I don’t think you can do that under 10,000 words.

Keep in mind that thousands of other applicants write their essays the way you did. You have to make your essay stand out. See, writing an essay is like creating a commercial for the audience to purchase your product. Imagine that the school you’re applying to is the audience, and you’ll have to try to make your audience pick you by explaining what you can offer to the school. Writing an essay isn’t all about telling how much you love the school; you can’t sell your products by telling people how much you love your audience. Oh, and don’t use the word “love” too much, because it sounds as if you’re exaggerating even if you’re not. If you really do love something about Rutgers, you have to prove your claim.

Those were my reasons to you
that’s why i need help…I need help with how to make myself stand out in the essay

Read the constructive criticism I wrote, and go see your English teacher. I’m sure he/she will be glad to help you formulate a decent essay. Good luck.

I got into rutgers New Brunswick and I am going to be a sophmore this year.

Honestly, you need a higher GPA. I got in with a 3.6 GPA from Piscataway High School and I had a 1600 on my SATs. But note that I also had tons of honors and AP classes, and i had a ton of community service. Besides that, I got in the last day!

I feel as if I was not even taken seriously. I think i got in with luck, and just apply and see what happens. if i were you, i would do the early applications because it might actually help you out! Also, do a lot of community service or volunteer work which will help you a lot. they do check that stuff.

i called and they said letters of recommendations were not really considered unless you were borderline and they had to choose between you and another student.

I was also not the last pick because i know that if you are borderline, you might be called in for an interview. but i was near last because i got in the last day!

good luck! apply to MCC or Rutgers Newark and transfer over. I say apply to Rutgers Newark, you will def get in, and then transfer over.

Thanks:)
Just wondering, when did you apply?
