Hey, I'm a junior in high school and i'm already starting my college process. I want to major in science(biology) to become a orthodontist. I'm want to go to Rutgers New Brunswick but i'm worried i wont get in. I'm not a bad student, never got suspended etc but my grades aren't that good. I get mostly B's and C's. I haven't taken my SAT yet, but i took my PSAT and i got a 330 for Math, 430 for Writing, and a 380 for critical reading. I swim and im in the boy scouts.

No, you will probably not get in.

Maybe try community college, get good grades, and transfer. If you don’t get good grades, you may want to rethink your career choice.

Thanks anyway :/

Your PSAT scores seem a bit low; let’s hope that you pull up your scores significantly when you take the SAT (which usually happens because people actually spend do lots of prep when it comes to the SAT).

Rutgers accept many people in-state, so it’s almost like everyone in NJ gets into Rutgers. BUT Rutgers NB seems to be a bit more competitive than the other Rutgers branches.

I do live in state and yes i’m taking SATs classes, I took the PSATs in the early school year, i think that’s why i got so low

Make sure you apply to a few other schools so that you have other choices if you do not get in.

Did you actually try on the PSATs? That would be a better judge of whether you’ll do better or worse when it comes time to take the real SATs - which you should be doing soon, especially since you want time to take them again in case the first time doesn’t go so well. You could also look into taking the ACT and you may do better on that. I got scores similar to what you got on the PSAT when I took the SAT in 6th grade, so I’m not sure it’s just because it was early in the year.

Don’t be afraid to look into a community college or one much more lenient on accepting students with those types of scores. Rutgers may be more willing to take in iffy in-state kids, but unless your scores improve quite a bit it will be a long shot.

I didn’t take the PSAT that seriously because it was the beginning of school.

PSAT is usually a good indicator of what your SAT range will be. Did you not even try? If so, then maybe your SATs will be better. But your grades are still a problem. Bs and Cs put you in a 2.75ish GPA and that may be too low for NB.

It’s not too late though. Work hard and get your GPA up. You may have to go to another school if you don’t get into Rutgers, but if you do well, you can still succeed. Not everyone takes the same path, but if you are aiming for a competitive school/career, you have to start working a little harder.

Thanks! I’m working my butt off, hopefully I’ll make it. I let you guys know
