No one has said this, but I think the writing on your application is a big deal (I can’t remember, but I think my daughter had to answer several short answer questions). My daughter was admitted last year (didn’t accept) and on her acceptance letter, there was handwritten note referring to her ECs and some of the answers on the application. She did not take herself too seriously, and let her irreverent and sassy personality shine through. Don’t look “desperate.”
@Luckymama64, congrats to you on your daughters acceptances! My mom is Uruguayan and aside from two waitlists at top 5 schools I was rejected everywhere in the top 20 (yes I know they’re mostly reaches) before I changed my essays and applied the last minute to a couple very competitive schools. I can tell all of you this - ignore ALL the attention you get from the Ivies and elites via brochures and email spam. It’s NOT interest- whatsoever. By the way just so people understand I had a great many accolades including national publication student body president and I was humble in my essays - probably too much. Doesn’t help to be IMO. I also was NHRP (which I believe is kind of worthless in the eyes of admissions- unless you’re Mexican/Central American -mostly except for great merit publics!). I got a 35 ACT too but my small school offered no APs which I think hurt a lot- and though I was valedictorian my school didn’t rank until graduation . Too late. On top of all this I believe my school thinks we are all ‘great kids’ and don’t really show much praise - so no telling about those recs! actually ended up at a great place so no bitterness but surprise and a FYI to my fellow Latinos and gringo applicants- beware the great admissions fees scam! My academic Dean was kind of disappointed with all my rejections. Oh well. Just curious what your hija’s essay was about? Did she mention her Hispanic heritage?
@aero18 when it comes to tippy tops, part of the app is about matching yourself to them (not just what you like and want, but what they look for.) That is more than just the assets on the resume. In many cases, for the hoped for major, it’s important to have te right rigor in that area, as well as activities, both depth and breadth.
And admissions fees are listed and no mystery. If a kid chooses to apply and doesn’t have a waiver, it is his choice. He or she should be aware of as much that matters to those colleges as possible- and show it. (After all, you’re applying.)
That’s not just stats, some good ECs, and awards. The better informed an applicant is, the better he or she can try to make the app and supp.
OP says that he is a rising senior, so all of these achievements are aspirational - have not happened - (incl.Stanford grades b/c summer program is not over yet).
OP, come back in the fall with the exact things you can actually put on your app and you’ll get a better set of responses - not that anyone will know for sure.
