Will I get into the Naval Academy?

I am currently a Junior and have a 4.363 weighted GPA with a 3.72 unweighted GPA. I am ranked 4th out of a class of 103. I received a 173 on my PSAT and 2010 on my SATS. I play three Varsity sports, each earning All-League Honors and each I will captain in my Senior year. I have been a Peer Mentor and Tutor all three years of my high school. I have also been involved in Student Government all three years. I was an ambassador for the HOBY program (A leadership program - 1 student selected from each school). I am also very involved in my church as a Altar Server since the fourth grade and part of the Youth Group since freshmen year. I also was a participant in the Math Club my freshmen year. Can you help?

Well, you’ll have a decent chance.

Only way to know for sure, of course, is to apply and see for yourself. Too many other variables come into play to give you any better advice at this point than that.

Good luck! :)

XCI’s counsel is sound, it seems. The more one engages in this journey, the more one realizes that it is among the most difficult to project any specific case. Year in, year out in the mega sense, there is a profile. But …and it’s a big BUT …each year it’s a new creation …and for the vast majority, barring the “special needs of the Navy”, one is competing against a regional pool of competitors which one year may include 3 potential Rhodes scholars and the next none. And that’s the total unknown relative to any specific case. Not very comforting, especially when one wants a “chance me” response. The problem is there is no known profile for your pool of competitors.

And in the situation where you may become part of the national competition …where there is a predictable profile, more or less …it’s even more of a crapshoot.

So apply for admission and apply for a nomination. And do your best. That seems to be the manner in which it works best lest your last name’s Staubach or McCain.

It seems like you have the academic stats, but remember, there is SO much more involved than just academics and athletics to gain entry into any of the Service Academies. Leadership, motivation, and that little something extra, only you B&G (Blue and Gold) liason Officer can give you a handle on it. Suggest you make contact immediately if you are interested.

neugs:

I have to ask, “Have you applied for Summer Seminar?” If you haven’t, you should, and here’s the link: [Naval Academy Summer Seminar](http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/nass.htm)

USNA wants you to be well-rounded scholastically, athletically and in the community. Academics, SAT scores, and teacher recommendations make up the lion’s share of your “Whole Person Multiple” - the score used to rank candidates against each other - as well as your athletics and achievements. Hopefully, you have taken (or will take) classes in Calculus or pre-Calc if your school doesn’t offer it, Physics, Chemistry, History, English and at least two years of a foreign language. AP or IB classes are best - and you need to have solid grades in those classes, especially the math and science ones.

Sounds like you have the “well-rounded” thing down pretty well.

I’m a Blue and Gold Officer in Virginia, I’m a grad and have two kids at USNA. If you want to PM me and ask more pointed questions, I’d be happy to speak with you.

Best of luck!

neugs, your GPA and class rank indicate to me that you’re pretty smart. If I were you I’d re-take the SAT, I think there’s some room for improvement (not that it’s bad or anything, but I’m pretty sure it’s not maxed out :))

I applied here as well, got two nominations so far…
My record:
3.3 GPA unweighted, 4 years of Varsity Rugby, 1 year of freshmen football, 1 year of varsity wrestling, Currently living overseas in Chile, Been in the Youth Group 4 years, Attended NYLF in 2007, Am taking the IB diploma, 1 year of Habitat and Physics Club, 1 job that totaled 80hrs, 2 years of student ambassador programs.

how do I look?
