Will I get my acceptance rescinded from VCU?

Throughout all of high school, I’ve had A’s and B’s (except for one C sophomore year). Senioritis has hit me pretty hard this year, causing me to slack off a bit during the second quarter. However, my first quarter grades saved me, so my lowest first semester grade was a B+.

This quarter, my grades have dropped because I was pretty sick for a while. I’ve missed almost a month’s worth of school in some classes and as a result, I have 3 F’s and 4 A’s. My 3 F’s are in English 12 Honors, Human Anatomy, and AP Statistics. I’m working really hard to make everything up now (about 4 weeks before the quarter ends, including spring break), but I don’t think I’ll be able to bring all of my lowest grades up to B’s. The worst-case scenario would be my lowest grade being a D+ for the quarter, if I’m not able to bring it up any higher once I’ve turned in all of my work. If I were to earn an A next quarter, that would average out to be about a C+/B-.

I’m well aware that colleges only see the second semester grade and final, but I’m worried that my grades won’t be high enough (compared to my grades from first semester) once averaged. With the combination of missing a month’s worth of school and some of my second semester grades dropping to C’s (worst case scenario), would my acceptance to VCU be rescinded?

Ds and Fs will get you rescinded. Talk to your teachers. Get extra help. Put your nose back to the grindstone.

Time for senioritis is definitely over. Assuming you had a legitimate illness I would:

  1. See if it it possible you can get some kind of a medical incomplete for the semester instead of the D’s and F’s. If if the school would replace the grades once the missed work is made up.

  2. If not, definitely ask your guidance counselor to write a note explaining your situation (illness that caused you to miss a month of class) and include that with the transcript.

  3. If for any reason your guidance counselor won’t write a note, you should contact admissions with that information and provide a doctor’s note (I assume you were under the care of one or more doctors if you missed a month of school due to illness).

and absolutely 4) work hard to make up the missed work and get all your final grades in the C or better range.
