I applied to a large state school EA and got accepted in December. On one of the EC spaces, I put that I would be representing my high school as team captain of the quiz bowl at our state Beta Club Convention this spring. This was not a lie, as I really was chosen for the position and planned to attend at the time. However, I have ran into some unforeseen financial and family issues and I will not be able to go on the trip. Should I email the school about the correction? I do not want my acceptance rescinded over this, and I'm afraid if they check they will realize that I didn't take the position. Some of my friends said not to worry because they won't review accepted applications for EC flaws. I'm still worried though. Any advice?

Honesty is always the best policy. It is better to let them know, rather than hope they won’t find out. I would imagine that they will not rescind you, especially of you are upfront about it.

They cannot rescind you for circumstances beyond your control. Unforseen financial difficulties certainly fall in this category. Let them know what has transpired. Since it is a large state school, it is unlikely that your entire EC record factored in the admission decision at all anyway, let alone the details of one specific EC.

Leave it alone. I wouldn’t worry about it.

It seems to me that your being chosen for this honor is what’s key here, not whether you could make the trip, so while you should disclose the change in circumstances, I don’t think it will have any impact whatsoever.

ZERO chance your acceptance will be rescinded.

I agree with mommaj. And you should just let them know the situation.

I agree it should not be an issue.

RMLDad, I was surprised to find out flagship Us are starting to use ECs more in the admission process. Even your own UK considers ECs now.[2011-2012 CDS First Time, First Year Admissions](http://www.uky.edu/IRPE/fast_facts/cds/1112admissions.html) At tOSU they are important. http://oaa.osu.edu/irp/publisher_surveys/2011_Columbus_Campus_CDS.pdf

“Can I get rescinded” is a nonsensical question. People don’t get rescinded; acceptances get rescinded.

And no, they will not rescind your acceptance for this. I wouldn’t even contact them about it. It probably has very little bearing on your actual acceptance anyway.

@Erin’s Dad - I think most flagships (including the University of Kentucky) like to consider themselves as “highly selective” and using “holistic admissions”. Thus, they list a large number of factors, including ECs, as Considered on the Common Data Set. However, in the case of UK specifically, and I assume with most other flagships as well, admission boils down to rigor of courses, GPA and test scores. These are the only three factors listed by UK as Very Important and they do not have any listed as Important. In the Considered area, Interviews are included, but both of my kids were admitted without even having an interview. I also know that one of my kids was admitted before UK received any LOR from teachers, which is also listed as Considered. tOSU might be slightly different, but they receive 25k applications which is roughly the same number as Harvard and yet have fewer than half as many adcoms. I am skeptical that all essays and LOR are read for most candidates even though they are also listed as Important.

Of course, if you live in California, Michigan, North Carolina or Virginia my comments do not apply (at least at the flagship).

They wont care or give a crab.

However, im not sure about the UCs (they tend to be cray cray about that stuff)

It’s not a UC! Thanks so much for all the advice, guys.
