I am currently a Senior and I'm applying to West Point. I have a GPA of 3.9 and my class rank is 6/135. Sadly, I got a 1500 on my SAT (M: 460; R: 480; W: 560). However, I've heard that West Point takes a look at the "whole picture," meaning that they will look at how I have been involved in my community, my leadership skills, letters of recomendations, etc.

Here are my extracurricular activities:

-Wushu Sanshou (Chinese kickboxing): 14 years of experience, I train for 10 hours a week for 48 weeks a year. Here are my acheivements: National champion 2004, State Champion 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010; National finalist 2009, Regional champion 2008, 2009, 2010.

*NOTE: I competed for Mexico because I live in a border-city and the US does not have an official national team for Sanshou.

-AXA Insurances: I worked as an office assistant, helping on paper work and filing archives on the computer. I volunteered for all my highschool career, which is about 3 and 1/2 years by now. I serve 3 hours a week.

-Other: National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, worked as a tutor for a middle school.

Thank you for your time! I'm looking forward for all your comments! What are my chances?

They do look at the total picture but those SAT scores will bring you way way down (probably to the point where you would not get accepted). I would highly recommend retaking it or taking the ACT

What about a 1700 SAT (Score choice, without score choice my highest is 1690) and 103 on the TOEFL?

Im an international applicant from a preferred country (according to the Defense Attache at my country’s embassy…and no one else is applying from here!).

All I can tell you is what my experience was. I applied from a highly competitive high school with a 3.5 GPA and an 1890 SAT and was put on the wait list and eventually denied from West Point but offered an ROTC scholarship to the college of my choice which has been awesome (I’m a sophomore). What held me back was my SAT (590 on math killed me). It is really important to do well on the SAT and unless it has changed I think you can take the SAT as many times as you want and West Point will take your highest scores, so I would recommend doing that.

Andres1 - Honestly, your SAT scores will not qualify you academically. Have you taken the SAT more than one time?
You really need to concact your regional officer in admissions and have a conversation with him/her concerning your qualifications. They are best to advise.
There is a disconnect between your SAT’s and your GPA. Is English your first language? What is the highest level of math you have taken in high school.

sorry to ask about myself, but I got a 620 Math and 630 CR, will this put me in the category of not academically qualified? I wish WP looked at writing since I got a 650, but that doesn’t really matter :/

kjang–Your SAT scores would probably be high enough, but there are many other things that go into the application. Demonstration of high level leadership (captains of teams, officers in clubs) are also very important for academy applications.

I totally agree with you, my SAT scores have hindered my chances for admissions in MANY colleges. I already took the SAT three times, and this was my best score so far, but I’m planning on taking the ACT on December.

I’m also planning to call the admissions office this week. I already sent them an e-mail with my improvements, because West Point canceled my account due to my scores/leadership skills/sports. My first language is Spanish, and I’m currently taking Calculus I (which is what Seniors normally take).

^
They canceled your account because of your SAT’s, most likely.
Good idea to call them - make sure they know that English is NOT your first language.
Good Luck!

@ JustaMomOf4:
I am taking the ACT in December!
I have turned in one congressional app, completed another, and am working on the last! I am extremely nervous for them :/
