So I filled out my FAFSA before the March deadline, and my report said that the only aid I was going to receive was loans. I barely noticed (Thanks to my college's My Aid report) that I entered my. Parents tax return info under both their financial info and my financial info on the FAFSA. I updated my FAFSA today and I was wondering if I would receive any aid now because of the changes. Before, my expected family contribution was $34,000 and now, with the changes, it is about $8,000. Hopefully I will now receive more aid from the FAFSA, but will I receive aid from the Cal grant as well? Or is the cal grant limited in the amount of money they give out?

You corrected SAR should tell you what kinds of Federal Aid you entitle to.

With an $8000 EFC, you would be guaranteed a $5500 Direct Loan, and nothing else. That EFC is too high for the Pell Grant.

As an FYI…FAFSA doesn’t “give” any aid at all. It is a financial aid application form that is submitted to your colleges. The FAFSA EFC does determine eligibility for the Pell Grant (your EFC is too high), and is also used for other federally funded aid programs…as determined by your college.

The Calgrant is another whole story. I believe it is based on your family income, and your financial need.

I guess I wonder why you didn’t notice this error sooner than now.

So does this mean that the only aid I might receive is still loans?

I am unclear, did you fill out the financial aid forms as required by your college in addition to doing the FAFSA? The college is where you would most likely get additional money. What state to you live in and what college are you planning on attending?

I live in California and plan on attent UC Irvine. As far as I know, the FAFSA was the only financial form required.

Did you complete the Calgrant application in a timely fashion? Accurately? I believe this all had to be done by March 1. Is your family income under $80,000?

I have no idea what the Calgrant folks do if a student makes an error on the FAFSA that would make them ineligible for the Calgrant, but then corrects the FAFSA…in June…to reflect the change. Contact the Calgrant folks to ask.

Are you saying that you first put everyone’s info under YOUR name?

What is your parents income?

contact your college…your UC should give you a UC grant if you dont qualify for a cal grant.

@thumper1 I completely in a timely fashion, but not accurately. I don’t think I would relieve a cal grant since I barely noticed this mistake, but I will still contact them. And yes, my family’s income is under $80,000.

@mom2collegekids I put my parents financial info under my name AND under their name. So it was there twice. My parents income is about $60,000. Am I just supposed to tell the UC that I made a mistake? Will they ask for my parents tax papers for verification?

When you filed your corrected FAFSA, did you link to the IRS retrieval tool?

Yes, call your school financial aid office and explain what happened.

@thumper1 No I did not. Would that make it easier for them to verify?

Yes.
