Will internally transferring be possible??

I got accepted to UT, but not to the Jackson School of Geosciences like I wanted. If I do an internal transfer after I have 24 hours, what is the possibility that I could transfer if I get a good gpa at UT? I got accepted to UT with a 3.79 and 63 credits, so I don't know what is good enough for the college... I've taken historical geology, physical geology, calculus, and chem 1. That is all i have because I didn't decide until fairly recently that I wanted to pursue geology.

I'm asking this because if it is too much of a long shot that I would be able to internally transfer then i don't want to waste my time at UT. I wanted to talk with an academic advisor about this but I don't think that is a possibility. Currently I'm a russian major, so will I be able to take any science classes or calculus classes??

Any insight or suggestions?

Thanks so much.

Let’s clarify.

You are a transfer student. What status? Junior?

You were accepted to COLA as Russian major.
Correct?

[Internal Transfers | Jackson School of Geosciences](Internal Transfers | Jackson School of Geosciences | The University of Texas at Austin)
Transfer requirements. No problem to take any introductory Math or Chemistry class, GEO 303 is open, GEO 401 is restricted to GEO majors. UT sometimes opens these restricted classes in the beginning of semester after all major students registered, if some spots are still available.

COLA is an inconvenient college to transfer to Geosciences. The best college for transfer is UGS, they will allow you to take restricted introductory classes for Geocsineces or any other major where you plan to transfer, and COLA will not, COLA will deal only with its own classes.

Russian major is not impacted, there are no restrictions on introductory classes, and language classes are not a problem since it’s one of the most difficult languages, GPA killer, and students take it only if they absolutely must.

So the best way to transfer would be to switch from COLA to UGS (COLA is always an option, no problem to come back, very easy transfer) and start taking Geology, Math and Chemistry classes. And I would suggest not to take these 3 classes with Russian your first semester if you want 3.3-3.6 GPA.

There is one exception for Russian:Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Geological Sciences. It’s a special COLA thing, usually for double majors.

Thank you for your reply. I will be entering as (I think) a junior, assuming they take all my credits from spring and summer. How do i go about switching to UGS? Can I do it at orientation, or can I email an advisor and ask to switch. I will be in Austin in a couple of weeks so if I have to go the university, who will I need to get in contact with there to switch? On the application status, I already used the switch major button because I guess I didn’t realize I could only do it once…

Thank you! This process has me so confused and stressed.

My educational guess would be to go to UGS office.

Or you can call them, better between Freshmen orientations, and ask.

@melpru,
Your best bet is to speak with admissions on the phone. I am a transfer student too and I am trying to switch my major as well. I have been on the phone with several different departments at UT today. I finally had my questions about internally transferring answered by admissions. They can go over with you the exact steps you can take to switch everything at orientation.

I just came back from orientation and if you want to switch into UGS it is done at orientation and a super easy process. Literally all you do is go to a desk (which you will see on the first day) and there will be a sign saying switch into UGS and just put your info there and its an automatic switch
Goodluck!

Thank you!
