will leaving my major as undecided make me lose on any kind of money? fafsa, or state aid, or scholarships?

Federal aid–no. State aid–no. School specific grants–no. Private scholarships–no, unless the terms of the scholarship is restricted to certain majors only.

Some schools award departmental scholarshps to high stat incoming freshen who declare a major in specific departments. Declaring “undecided” will exclude you from consideration for those specific scholarships.

Currently it can make a huge difference for federal aid. The SMART grant is a federal need based grant of $4000 a year for juniors and seniors, but is available only for certain majors, mostly math and sciences and foreign languages. My daughter received this for this year and last on top of her Pell grant. Unfortunately the SMART grant is being discontinued after this school year. There is also a grant called the TEACH that is for teachers, but has some complicated rules. I *think *that is still around. I don’t know of other federal grants that are major specific.

Also there can be specific departmental aid that may require a major to be declared.

I happen to graduate this year, assuming i get that SMART grant, do i get it next year too since i got on it this year?

Freshmen aren’t eligible for SMART grants. Only college juniors and seniors.

There is no SMART grant funding for next year at all…so no possibility that anyone will receive it, regardless of whether they receive it this year or not.

No one will get it next year. Juniors who got it this year will not get it as seniors next year. It ceases to exist after this school year. The ACG also ceases to exist.

Those scholarships awarded to certain majors, do they offer them after admission process or before? i chose undecided, by i think i am going to change it to something i might be doing if that may give me a scholarship. i submitted the application but haven’t been accepted yet.

Department (major) specific scholarships are awarded as part of the admission process. Some require separate applications. Some are awarded competitively to the strongest applicant(s). Some have financial need requirements.

You will need to check both the department page(s) of the college(s) you’re applying to AND the scholarship information page of the college(s) you’re applying.

Simply putting down X as your major will not guarantee you’ll get a X-major’s scholarship.
