Hey guys, so i'm curious as to how much a low CR score on the SAT I's will hurt my admission chances to colleges such as Carnegie Mellon, UChicago, Cornell, and other top ranked colleges where I will go into sciences/engineering. Will my subpar reading score hurt my chances even though im solely focused on sciences and all my other stats are par or better.

SAT I
Math:760
Writing:730
Reading:660

Math II:800
Chem:750

GPA
UW:3.95
Weighted:5.85

1 B in High School

Lots of extracurriculars
volunteering, science officer, lab assistant, deca state finalist, internship, lacrosse, summer coaching, etc

Lots of science awards too and won competitions

so my question is how much will my low reading socre hurt my chances?

I suspect some allowance will be given since you will be a science / engineering major. However if your CR falls at or below the colleges 25th percentile it will be a weakness in your resume.

My CR score was lower than my other section scores (CR 660, M 720, W 780) and I don’t think it effected my terribly in college admissions. I don’t think it’ll bring you down too much.

25% of admitted students have scores at or below the 25th percentile. That’s one for every four. The OP’s situation is exactly how these admits happen–students in the bottom 25% of admits in one category are likely on the stronger end in other categories.

Since you’re looking at science and engineering and since your other scores are strong, I don’t think this will hold you back too much.

I disagree, for top ranked schools like Cornell and UChicago, I suspect the majority of students with test scores lower than the median and 25th percentile are hooked students: minorities, athletes and development admits.

I don’t think it would be a bad idea to retake the sat. Those schools have high critical reading averages. Your chances would prove considerably if you get a mid 700 or higher in CR.

What if you’re in a similar situation, but your low score is in math? Will that effect your admission if you’re applying to mostly liberal arts colleges and plan on majoring in a humanity?
