Hello CC,

I'm applying to selective colleges for Computer Science, and the problem is - as with many other Asians - extremely low critical reading score on SAT

CR: 520 (Ew!)
Math: 790
Writing: 640 (8 in essay)
Total: 1950

Schools I'm considering are: GaTech, Purdue, UMich
I don't want to retake SAT. It's horrible!
I will take ACT in december, which doesn't test for intense reading skills. And I think I can hit a 32 or 33 on ACT (with 30 in both English and Reading). Is that good enough? Also, because december would be too late I will have to send my SAT scores anyway. Purdue and Umich have rolling admissions and I cannot risk applying in January, when there will be only few seats left. They may even release decision before I send my ACT scores. So for now, chance me with the SAT score in hand.

Don't ask for GPA. I did full-IBDP and scored 32 (excluding TOK and EE).
Physics HL - 6
Maths HL - 5
ITGS HL - 5
Chemistry SL - 6
English SL - 5
Hindi SL - 5

While I'm applying to college of science, they will definitely glare at my low CR (and maybe IB).
Please write whatever you think about this issue. I appreciate criticism. Should my chances be extremely slim, I will lose hopes of going to US.

Thank you for reading this post.

Your CR, and total SAT score are just too low for top school. If you get the ACT score you think you will get you will be fine, though honestly I doubt you will (that is a huge jump). As for the “do college care about a good CR score when you are applying for math/science” part, yes…They still care, no matter your major you need those reading and writing skills to excel.

Your best bet is the ACT

Your SAT score isn’t good, and your IB test scores don’t look so great.

Thank god for English by the way. If grades were based on math and sciences alone, universities would be exclusively Asian.

Hahaha… I wish we had opportunities in Asian universities too. And yes, my practice tests show that I can certainly get a 32 in ACT. Thank you for the chances. Seems like no hope. But I’ll apply anyway and see how that goes. Maybe purdue willing to accept me.

ACT is very different from SAT. It doesn’t test for intense reading skills and I usually get only 3-7 wrong in the reading section. But science and math are my thing yeh! I’ll aim for 36 in both and that would
Definitely boost my score.

Oh! And I forgot to mention another important info. I’m giving SAT subject tests in dec (phy, chem, math2).
I think I can get 750+ in each, but I’ll aim for 800.
And they should reach on time.

And midas, MIT does allow international students to submit TOEFL and SAT2 Maths as an alternative to SAT. But you see, it’s not exclusively Asian, is it?
