get a job in the business sector? do business companies like to hire history majors?

Do you consider being at Starbucks as a job in the businesss ector?

no not those kind of jobs. i mean more like IB companies, Bain Capital, Goldman Sachs, etc...

I'd say you are much more likely to end up at Starbucks. How many history majors from UCB were hired by such firms in the last three years? Take that number and divide by 3. In the current economy that is about how many will get hired. I'd guess the odds are much better for Starbucks.

barrons, you seem very fixated on Starbucks.

As for OP, if you want to work for IB companies and make the "big bucks," why don't you major in something more relevant to the business like finance or economics?

You can theoretically major in anything and go into IB if you just happen to also be talented in the areas they need, but you'd have significantly higher chances if you knew something going in about the subject.

Also, "good enough to" is a very iffy phrase. Do you think majoring in history will make you "good enough to" or going to Berkeley?

Here're the facts. A couple of UCB History grads last year got such jobs--Monitor, Boston and B of A. Last year was a great year for jobs. 3 out of 200 or so reported such jobs. So now I'd say you have a 1 in 200 chance. I'd work hard on the TFA application.

Career Center - What Can I Do With a Major In...?

^ so basically no... oh well

Starbucks is universal speak for jobs you did not need to go to college to get, but many college grads hold. Nearly all the folks at my Starbucks hold degrees. Many are marking time doing it until they go to grad school to help get a real job. I also love Starbucks and worked there during my sabbatical.

So you know you are going to do something business related, why the hell would you pick history? Sounds like an absurdly question.
