I go to a school that offers 18 AP courses. I’m a junior right now and so far I’ve taken 8 of these and will take another 6 next year. I’ve been hearing nonstop that AP classes and scores are hardly put into consideration during college admissions, but looking at other people’s stats and seeing that most people have taken less than 10, I have to wonder if 14 will put me at any sort of advantage.
Last year I got a 5 on AP Psych and a 4 on AP Euro. I took the AP Calc AB, Spanish, Language, Biology, Physics 1 and US history tests this year and next year will take the AP Calc BC, Lit, Chem, Environmental, Human Geo and Gov tests. I’ve gotten straight A’s in all my classes, and APs are weighted.
Does none of this really matter in the college admissions process?
Where did you hear AP classes aren’t put into consideration during college admissions? That is false, they give you a huge advantage especially if you take 14.
"I’ve been hearing nonstop that AP classes and scores are hardly put into consideration during college admissions, "
That’s crazy talk. If you can take a monstrously difficult courseload, and kill 'em – of course that’s a boon to your application. But don’t take them just so you can say you have 14 but get a load of Bs. Take what you can and still do well.
When I take AP economics at my school and it’s AP micro economics one semester, and AP macro economics the next, will it count as 2 AP courses in the eyes of an AdCom? Also if at my school AP Calc BC counts as AP AB and AP BC but it’s only listed under 1 class will that count as 1 or 2 AP classes
They will be considered under “rigor of curriculum”. That is typically one of the standard three very important considerations for nearly all universities. The scores normally don’t get considered until determination for credit is made.
