Basically in my Common App long essay, I made it clear that I am not a competitive person that likes to hide from my peers what grades I get or what SAT prep business I am using. I am the girl who listens to Bob Marley and likes a cohesive student body, not one that wages psychological warfare from super competitiveness on my peers.

The problem is, I was reading some posts on CC and one of them said Columbia is highly competitive and is not a place for people that are not hyper-competitive.

Will I be rejected, because I'm not a hyper-charged-wanna-destroy-my-competition type of student? Your replies are greatly appreciated.

girl who’s laid back, likes a sense of community, & loves bob marley? YES
girl who (somewhat cynically) throws her classmates under a bus? naww…

i think you should focus your essay on everything BUT the competitiveness of your school/ horrible things people do to each other to up their class ranks.

The centerpiece of my essay was definitely not about how I don’t like the competitive and sometimes-cruel environment AP students facilitate, but it was just a short note/opening to my long essay. I didn’t say cruel in my essay or anything though! :[

Focus on being yourself. If you are fake…it is NOT benefit and most schools can tell if you are trying to be something you are not. What you say about yourself sounds interesting and I love that you love Bob Marley because I love his music to ^_^. I think most schools want creative and laid back students; you know, a friendly campus and bonding students. Not kill for kill divided students. I think you would bring fresh ideas to Columbia. Good luck.
