Will my high SAT help my low GPA due to illness and family problems when it comes to admissions?

I am a high school senior and I have a low GPA due to a lot of family problems and also medical problems
(diagnosed with severe depression and also a blood disorder) but things have been getting a lot better in my first semester of 12th grade. I do have a high SAT (about 2200) score. Would that help college admissions? Would that be something I mention in the essays? I would love to get into one of my dream school (obviously not harvard more like Michigan and UVA). Any help is appreciated thanks!

This something that should be mentioned in your GC’s rec. Don’t mention it yourself- it will sound like an excuse. Have your counselor mention the family problems and the blood disorder (i would actually just state it as medical condition- they don’t care about the specifics) and how you have worked to overcome them. Do NOT mention the depression, unfortunately, this is a liability at some colleges and can affect your admissions.

Thanks! Also would mentioning my problems help on my college essays help?

@Mastodon123 your college essays should highlight an interesting and unique aspect of yourself that will make adcoms want to admit you. If you’re already mentioning the reason for your grades not being as high as they could have through your counselor and the “Additional Info” in Common App, then you’re covered.
