I have a really big problem right now. So I was accepted into UC San Diego as a political science major and accepted my admissions decision to attend. I decided to take only two non required political science courses for this semester since I already had my 60 units completed. About a month ago, I talked with a UCSD counselor and she basically told me that I have no required courses for this major and it won’t affect me if I dropped one since I was considering it at the time. I ended up not dropping both because I wanted to persevere. Well, I received a C+in political theory II and a D* (69.6%) in another poli class. My anxiety is out the roof right now. Would UCSD rescind my admissions decision because of this D? Should I email my professor? I know, the best thing to do is to let them know right now and they’ll give me a definite answer, but it’s just anxiety provoking for me. The class isn’t required… plus I’ve already completed my IGETC…
Just let them know as soon as possible. I also failed one of my classes, and that class wasn’t required for anything. They told me it won’t affect my admission status. I also provided a brief explanation of why I couldn’t pass the class.
You need to talk with them immediately - on Monday. They do have conditions for admission and that is often to maintain a certain GPA (not sure if overall or for the quarter).
Well that lifted up my spirits about the situation. Thank you!
You’re definitely right, they do have semester gpa for spring at a 2.0… however my IGETC was already (technically) competed prior, so I’m praying there will be mercy at the admissions committee…
So what happened @cakeguy10 - did you call UCSD and what did you find out?
@CAtransplant Let’s just say I completely “lucked out”. Note that my final grade wasn’t submitted on my transcripts yet, so I emailed my professor asking about a policy regarding rounding to the nearest integer and to verify this was my grade. Never “begged” for a higher grade in the email. He rounded it to a 70. I saved myself from a VERY uncomfortable conversation with UCSD… really disappointed in myself. Definitely got taught a life lesson out of this.
That’s great @cakeguy10 So is a 70 a C- and does UCSD not mind those?
@CAtransplant So in the CCC (California community colleges), they do not include + or - on transcripts nor do they affect student GPA. No matter how high or low the percentage would be, as long as it meets the mark. In this case, only a “C” would appear in my transcripts.
@CAtransplant UCSD only minds maintaining a semester 2.0 GPA prior to transfer and above a 3.0 overall GPA after the last semester
@cakeguy10 @CAtransplant just to clarify, the UCs do count plus (+) and minus (-) for transfers. (They don’t factor them in high school grades.) A C- is not seen as a C if you’re transferring with college courses.
@Ohm888 Very weird, they do assess transfer GPA on that scale. However, my school does not include that grading format. My transcripts make no indication of percentages/ (+) or (-). I’ve also talked to a UCSD counselor mentioning my academics about a month ago and it’s the same GPA as if it were in “high school” format. I think it varies by the transferring institutions perhaps? Since it’s not only subjective to CC students, but also to university students as well. My best guess
Sounds like @cakeguy10 's transcript is just going to show it as a C. But @Ohm888 is saying if the transferring institution shows a grade as a C- then that will affect the GPA as a C-.
@cakeguy10 the UC will assess the grade on the transcript. If your college doesn’t include the minus, the UC will only see the C.
