I want to take a 4th year of language my senior year and I REALLY want to take AP Prob and Stats but the only way I can do that is by dropping Calc BC. I am doing bad in AB, but would it look bad to drop it for senior year? Or should I just stick it out.

Just curious… :]

Oh and I plan on majoring in Egyptology, so I really need the 4th year of language.

I’m pretty sure the admissions people say something on the lines of “hard classes are good, but taking classes that interest you is important” maybe that wasn’t Brown, but they all say the same thing…If you can justify your choice, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with swapping BC for Stat. Don’t contact admissions about this, that is silly. Talk with your guidance counselor. Ultimately you should be taking classes that you WANT to take, not classes that you think will look good on a transcript.

And it’s arguable whether or not one class looks “better” than another. It depends on what the rest of your application reflects on you as a student.

My guidance counselor doesn’t help, which is why my post count is so high on here lol. The highest school she’s ever sent anybody to is U of M. She is basically worthless, as much as it pains me to say it. She didn’t even know we had a test out program for math at my school. Plus I tried to schedule test outs for the pointless freshman classes I had to take and she never scheduled them (yes we HAVE to schedule through them) so I basically wasted my freshman year.

Sorry a little rant.
But thanks. That’s probably why I’m going to take Stats over BC. It’s just more interesting.

listen, girl, I took Calc BC. Big mistake. I got 99 last year in Math. I am getting at least 10% below that in Calc BC. If you can get out of it at this stage, GET OUT OF IT. honest advice. And this is from a guy who used to be in Math Olympiad.

its okay
my friend, she goes to brown now
she went from BC to stats
its okay
it really is
do what you want
its ur senior year and brown wont kill you for one math class change

Actually, I don’t think it would look very weird at all to not take BC. At a lot of schools, kids don’t even take BC after they take AB, so Brown might just think that was the case for you.

Kristina-- the local adcom will be aware of the school’s course offerings and often have a sense of what kind of schedules students who have previously been admitted took. That’s why admissions counselors are divided regionally (or at least one reason). Being such a large school, as already mentioned by the OP, I’m sure the admissions counselor for that area will be aware of the coursework available.

My high school did not offer BC, and Brown knew that when looking at my transcript. Similarly, they’ll know that the OPs school does offer it.

Again, it “weakens” your schedule, but by how much and what effect it may or may not have is anyone’s guess.

you said you were doing poorly in Calc AB. You didn’t define poorly, but if you are getting a B now and feel in danger of getting a C in Calc BC, you would very likely be better off with Stats. Yes, it’s a weaker course, but there’s a balance students need to find between course rigor and their ability to handle it - a C in Calc BC definitely doesn’t strengthen your profile, after all. Of course, if you don’t take BC, you can’t present yourself as a science-inclined student, but you couldn’t do that anyway if you weren’t doing well in the course.

By doing badly I mean I have a low C (although it’s going up, I will probably have a high C this semester and a low B next).

I am not planning on being a science or math major of any kind. I just don’t understand Calc… well I do, but I have a hard time putting things in words which is why I’m doing bad in calc. I’m working with a tutor now and maybe that will help.

Colleges want to see the calculus on your transcript…that being said, you have already taken AB and you are not planning on being a science and math major…Stats can be extremely beneficial for social sciences and business careers…IMO, not a problem to take AP stats next year…In fact, most schools that do not have BC recommend their students to take AP stats as seniors (if available)…
